Purchasing Belgian Beer

Just got back from Belgium and loved the beer. We brought back as much as we could carry, but were trying to figure out if we can purchase beer over the internet and have it shipped? Is it a state or federal regulation that would prohibit me? I am trying to search for the guidelines.

Has anyone ever done this?

Alex, welcome back. Your luggage must have been heavy.

Most states make it a crime (many a felony) to ship in alcohol that isn't through a licensed distributor. There are a couple of sites out there that list the rules by state. Search on Yahoo.

So if your state has rules preventing it, you could try to order through your local beer store. But if you live in a backward state like Georgia, you'll have even more trouble as we are limited to 6% alcohol in our beer.

After being stationed in Belgium (and falling in love with the beer), my husband and I were then sent to Maryland. We were able to find Chimay and Leffe biers in our local shop, although they were, of course, MUCH more expensive because they were imports.
Brian in Atlanta,
Belgian beer is in Atlanta,as well. Harry's Markets and the Bullock's chain in Cobb County carry Belgian beers; I've found Lembecs and Chimay in both at one time or another.

Thanks, Wes in Roswell. I have been able to get some of the lower-alcohol Belgian brews intown as well (though their freshness has always been in question). I was more taking a jab at what I consider to be a stupid law (beer is limited to 6% while wine and spirits are not).

And while it's a big-name beer, Hoegarden has been available on draft in almost every intown bar for about a year now (not an exageration). It appears that the distributor has been almost giving it away to establish a quick market presence. Hope it sticks around.
