Puglia Question - Is Taranto worth visiting?

Hello, Fodorites.

In May, my wife and I will be driving from Matera to Gallipoli. Looks to be about a 2.5 hr trip.

I'm trying to decide if a stop in Taranto would be worth it. Looks like there is A museum and a castle.

I'm leaning towards skipping Taranto and having more time in Gallipoli.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Robbie

Skip Taranto, it's a big, industrial city with little to recommend it, unless you love belching oil refineries. Nice centre but there's much better sights to be had in Puglia.

Agree, I am sure there is a nice historic centre, but as we drove around it doing a similar trip we were glad we hadnt allocated any time there. There are so many places to see, I wouldnt bother including this.

Thanks, Jami.

Your and Scott's TR on Puglia was awesome, by the way. I made lots of notes from it.

I just started emailing some wineries about tours and tastings and have gotten some good, quick response from multiple places.

Also found a place/company that offers trail rides (horses) on the beach and in the olive groves/orchards(?), so I'm excited about that, too!

Thanks again,

Robbie

Chuck, if you do end up here visit the little island that makes up the Sparten centre. It's not very pretty but for shear urban grit (particularly the north side) it is worth a bunch of photos, if you want pretty go back to Martina Franca etc.

Thanks for the heads up on the gritty photo ops, Bilbo. I'll keep that in mind.
