I agree with natylou -- it would be best if you can at least learn the civilities, and be aware that not everyone will speak English, but I found it easy to travel the area without speaking Italian -- and I didn't have any electronic translation devices!

Bilboburgler thanks again for all the tips, in particular, the wine tips! Wine and food are the reasons I love Italy. I am still working on possibly going via train!
