Pubs/inns in Yorkshire Dales

Does anyone know of any good places to stay in the Yorkshire Dales? We'll be driving back to London from Scotland after a wedding in May and we're looking for a cosy, traditional pub with pretty rooms and good food, preferably not too far from the A1. I found one place called the General Tarleton Inn near Knaresborough which looks OK - has anyone stayed there?

We'll be driving up via the Lake District and plan to stay overnight near Ullswater. Any recommendations in that area would be welcome too!

Thanks
Zoe

Hi, Zoe,
The AA accommodation guide lists pubs (some with rooms) for Yorkshire & the Dales at http://www.theaa.co.uk/region3/AllPubs.html
The same site lists lots of other hotel and B&B options.
Knaresborough is a pretty village near Harrogate. It's not exactly in the Dales, though, but not a long drive.
Hi Zoe,
We, also were driving from Scotland to London and happened upon a wonderful little place. We liked it so much that we made a point of staying there on our next trip. It may not be as far south as you'd like, but here it is...

Helme Park Hall Hotel
Near Bishop Auckland
County Durham

Tel and Fax 01388 730970

It is actually on A68. We were coming down A68 from Edinburgh, but if you are going to take the A1, it may be further than you want to go off the A1.

Ask for a room facing south...the views over the dales are beautiful.
The pub was cozy and friendly and the food was good.

Good luck.

Try 'The Angle' at Hetton. It is fabulous. It has a fancy restaurant and also a bar-restaurant where you can buy the lovely food at cheaper prices. It is not too far from Skipton and is in an idyllic, very English surroundings. May will be ideal. You can sit outside and enjoy the weather (!)
Remember, drinking and driving is a definite no-no in the U K, both legally and socially.

The Red Lion in Burnsall is just outside of Skipton and near the Bolton Abbey. Very nice, good food and a pub.

These suggestions are all good.

BTW, Knaresborough is a town, not a village.

Hi Zoe,

You are spoiled for choice in the Yorkshire Dales, with lots of lovely pubs serving good food. I would agree with Nigel and recommend the Angel in Hetton, we were there last month and both the food and the pub are fantastic! They have a web site at:
http://www.angelhetton.co.uk/
The bar is cheaper and more relaxed than the restaurant - try the duck which is delicious and explore the excellent wine list.

Another good choice would be the Yorke Arms in Ramsgill, near Pateley Bridge. Again excellent food in a very attractive pub, surrounded by lovely countryside. (And no I don't work for the Yorkshire tourist board!!) The Yorke Arms web site is at:
http://www.yorke-arms.co.uk/

Also recommended:
The Red Lion, Burnsall. Lovely village, great food. Web site at:
http://www.redlion.co.uk/

Foresters Arms, Carlton-in-Coverdale.
Attractive pub, excellent for seafood.

The Blue Lion. East Witton. Great food and accommodation in a upmarket pub. Visit the nearby village of Middleham with its castle while you are there.
A bit of info (not their own web site) at: http://www.greatinns.co.uk/blue_lion.htm

Any of the above should satisfy your requirements for "a cosy, traditional pub with pretty rooms and good food." As for somewhere near Ullswater, if you can afford it; the Sharrow Bay Hotel takes some beating. You are looking at least 100 pounds per person for dinner bed and breakfast though! If that is out of your price range; e-mail me for some bed and breakfast suggestions in that area.

Hope this is helpful,

regards,

Mark.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mark Southgate.
www.OneClickTravel.com
Online Travel made easy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
