Pre-booked Croatian hotels
I am booking hotels for an August-September visit in Croatia. I’m confused why I am quoted Euros when I pre-book a hotel in Croatia through booking.com, but I’m told I will have to pay in the local currency, at the exchange rate that is current on the day of my arrival at the hotel. That means they can’t actually tell me what my hotel will cost? Can you shed any light on this practise?

You should be able to set booking.com to show prices in the currency of your choice. The actual price is the price in the local currency, and booking.com generally includes the caveat that the actual rate will be based on the exchange rate at the time of your arrival no matter which currency you choose (because it will differ if you show the cost in any currency other than the local one) -- or at least that's been my experience.

thank you for taking the time to respond. Yes, I know what you mean by changing the settings for local currency - and I have used that in every other country I have booked. But it will not work for Croatia - and I have spoken to booking.com about it. It seems the practise of Croatia is to quote prices in Euros (also giving me an approximate price in my currency - Canadian) but when I receive the confirmation notice form booking.com, it only shows the cost of the room in Euros and states that the fee has to be paid in local currency (Croatian kuna). It seems that the cost of the room will depend on the currency fluctuation between the kuna and the Euro and the cost to me will be determined at the time I check in to the hotel. Any kuna amount given to me now is just an estimate - not a 'commitment'. So if this is truly the case and if I understand it all correctly, there is a big loop hole that makes me a bit uncomfortable - and I was wondering what experience others have had when it comes to prices quoted vs prices paid in Croatia.

Maybe that's a good solution, If you book directly with the hotel you want I'm sure that they will give you a fixed price.. or at least they should

Hotels abroad quote their prices in the local currency or sometimes in Euros. The amount you pay in Canadian dollars depends on the exchange rate when you pay. This is true either for booking.com or directly with the hotel.
BTW when traveling watch out for places -- hotels, restaurants, shops, even ATMs -- that convert your credit card charges to your home currency. This is called DCC, and uses an exchange rate higher than the bank rate. They're not doing you a favor; they're making money off you. Instead ask for your bill in local currency.
