yes definitely keep topping for ira, as I know he can fill you in on all the details. Also, do a search for ira's amalfi coast trip report where he wrote a very detailed review of his stay in Praiano.

Hi Brenden!
I'm going to be staying in Praiano in a few days, so I'll help as much as I can without actually having been there yet.
When you ask, "Is everything in walking distance?", if you mean in Praiano itself, I think so. My understanding is that Praiano is quite small. If you want to see more of the Amalfi coast, then you'll need to take a bus or boat.
Here's the link for Ira's trip report, which I found very helpful in planning my trip:

As far as swimming in October; the average high is around 70, so I would think it might be a little too cool, but that depends on how hardy you are!

brenden, I checked out La Sirene when I was in Praiano, it is a nice small hotel with good views, nothing fancy, friendly manager.
Praiano is indeed small, you can walk around town easily. You can take public transportation along the coast, many bus stops in Praiano.
Swimming is possible depending on the weather of course, but who can predict?
Ira is gaga over this hotel so yes look up his report.

hi brendan- I stayed in Praiano last year, didn't stay the le Sirene but did stop by to check out the rooms. Agree with Seaurchin's assessment.
I was there (Praiano) in late September and went swimming at both Praiano and at Castiglione a little further along the coast, with no problem. Maybe October is pushing it, but of you like being in the water, not impossible.
Buses are frequent, and it shouoldn't be any problem getting back and forth along the coast. Praiano is more quiet than Positano, less "touristy", and I loved it! The shopkeepers and people I spoke with at several small hotels around there were quite friendly.
Try eating at La Bracia in the middle of town, which has good food and a wood-burning oven.
Have a good time!

Hi Brenden,
I think that you will like the Le Sirene.
If you like a cocktail before dinner, the bar opens at 5:00. Try an American Martini Cocktail. Giancarmin puts a caperberry in it instead of an olive.
Everything in Praiano is within walking distance.
There is a bus stop at the top of the steps from the hotel. The Orange bus goes to Positano. The SITA buses go between Salerno and Sorrento.
I think that swimming would be possible in mid-Oct.
In addition to La Brace, La Strad is also very good.
