Prague round trip questions

we are in the early planning stages for a early May 2009 trip to eastern Europe. Thinking of flying into Prague, after a few days we will rent a car and head to Vienna, Budapest,Krakow and ?return to Prague. We do want to rent a car. The one way drop off fees get expensive. Would it be smart to keep the car the entire trip or drop it off and just pay the drop off fee to fly out of Budapest? Not sure how to map out this trip. We love the countryside and exploring, so we do want a car. Also not sure what to do with a car in Budapest.
What is a good round trip driving route that would allow us to see interesting places if we drive roundrtrip?

Hi W,

Have you tried plotting your route at www.viamichelin.com or www.maps.google.com?

You don't want a car in any of the cities you've mentioned.

Did you check round trip airfare to Budapest instead of Prague? We found it much cheaper to fly to Budapest when we were looking at airfares in April.

How long is your trip? If it's only 2 to 2.5 weeks then you won't have much time for exploring as each of these cities deserves a minimum of 3 days (I would actually stay longer) so that will be 12 days plus travel time between each city (at least 1/2 day).

I would fly into one city and fly home from another to maximize your sightseeing time. Returning to Prague could take half a day or more.

If you do rent a car you need to look at the gas charges versus drop off fees. It could easily be less expensive to pay the drop off fee. Mappy.com will give you the gas price between destinations.
