Prague or Budapest?

My wife and I will be in Munich for about 8 days in July. We are looking to take a 2-day side trip to either Prague or Budapest. We have heard conflicting reports as to which would be our best bet.

Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

Two days is not enough for either city. Having said that, both cities are very nice, interesting and fairly inexpensive. Prague is more commercial but the architecture is great and the Charles Bridge at night is most romantic. Budapest was damaged during the war but has been rebuilt. It suffers from being in the east but you can see that it once had that posh feel of Vienna.

I agree - 2 days isn't that much time, but I preferred Prague much more over Budapest (spent 8 days in Prague, 4 days in Budapest). It depends upon what your interests are though as to which city you'll like better. One thing that can be said for both - they're cheap!

As many here know I'm a big Budapest fan, but I'm going to recommend Prague in this situation. Neither city can be fully explored in two days, but Prague's main attractions are in a fairly central area. Budapest is more spread out and it takes more work on the part of the visitor to extract the delights. So make it Prague!

Another reason is that ther Czech Rep. has strong [not always happy] ties to Germany so will be a complement to time spent there.

I agree with Salley. Budapest is about my favorate city in Europe and the most beautiful, but it is large (over half of Hungarians live there) and really requires several days. I was there for 7 days and could have easily spent more. Prague is much smaller and you can get a good feel of it in 2 days. The buildings are charming and the architecture is great. Don't miss the Jewish quarter and cematary. Spend some liesurally time in the old town square. Visit the castle. This will consume your 2 days.
Regards
Art
i am in a similar situation. we prefer cities where we can see some sites fairly quickly, and basically enjoy the city by having a few brews with the locals. of the two eastern europe cities listed above, is one better than the other?

thanks in advance

Absolutely Prague, for all the reasons listed. Very walkable; fun street musicians; artsy activities and theater; gorgeous architecture. Always check your restaurant bills & count your change carefully. Do Budapest another time.

I love Budapest (I'm Hungarian), but with two days I would do Prague. You can see the major sites, areas in two days of Prague. If you do the Jewish Area, be sure to go into the two Synagogues. One is really ancient. Be sure to take in one of the many concerts at night. You'll love Prague.

Prague is a must. My husband & I spent 3 days last year. Be sure to stay at one of the small hotels in the heart of Prague....it's a great experience. Have fun!

Prague . . . but you ought to lop one day off Munich and spend 3 days in Prague--much more logical. And if for some reason that's impossible, at least take the 11:00 p.m. overnight sleeper from Munich to Prague so you'll arrive at 8:10 a.m. and have the entire first day instead of just half a day.
