Pousadas in Portugal-help finding one
Hello,

I noticed in reading through messages about pousadas that a couple of people mentioned one named quintas das sequioas, or quinta de la sequoias. (copied spelling from them) which I believe is in Sintra or in that direction. I have gone to www.pousadas.pt, but do not see it listed.

Can you help or make a suggestion as to any lodging. We are going to have about 10 days to visit Lisbon, and drive the coast.

Thanks in advance,
Jean

Hi, Jean,
We stayed at Azenhas do Mar, near Colares. This is right outside of Sintra. We stayed at a lovely hotel, with rates around $250 in the summer, and $60 in early spring. We had a large, terraced room that overlooked the ocean.
I preferred staying outside of Sintra, as Sintra is a little busy for my taste.
You may like it, however.
The Pena Palace is truly lovely. I highly recommend it.
Around Colares, is Azenhas do Mar, is Praia das Macas, and Praia Grande, all three tiny, quaint villages. There are many good restaurants that feature fresh fish and seafood daily.
I'm sure you will love Portugal as much as we did.
Have a wonderful trip!
Gigi
I don't see anything in my lists of Pousadas in that area that resembles what you wrote.

Maybe you are refering to Quinta das Seteais, an old palace converted into a luxury hotel ,but I´m not sure it belongs to the stately run Pousadas. Around Lisboa you have three really particular, two of them are situated in old castles with fantastic views, Palmela and Setubal and the other that is new is within the Old Royal Palace of Queluz.

Thanks for trying to help. It now dawns on me that the place I heard about wasn't a pousada.

Any recommendations on places to stay in Lisbon, near Sintra, and anywhere else on the southern coast (Algarve) would be appreciated--or a site on the web which allows us to e-mail, etc.

Again, thank you,
Jean

I recommend the Pousada do Castello (I think that's the name) in the small walled mountain-top town of Obidos, just north of Lisbon. The Pousada is in a converted castle circe 1300. Greta little town to walk through in the morning. Charming shops - some touristy, others more interesting. Good food at the Pousada and local restaurants.

When we were in Sintra (late May) it was pretty, but absolutely dead. Completely comatose - nobody around, restaurants essentially empty. Still, I recommend a short stay to see the Pena Palace and the Castello dos Mouros (a Moorish castle from around the year 700 - you can walk the old wall and battlements which I found exhillerating).

Jean, also check out the Manor Houses, very nice places usually equivalent to, but not as stuffy as, most pousadas. http://www.manorhouses.com/
