Hi DonT! This will certainly not be my last trip to Italy - if Ravenna doesn't fit, this time - there are other times.

Myer, thank you. This is in part why I've started this thread - to narrow it down.

necker, you are right - I only used Google Maps for a rough approximation. I just wanted the 10K foot view right now.

It is good to know how close some places actually are...!

Hello again

I dragged out my old copy of Fred Plotkin's "Italy for the Gourmet Traveler". He really talks up Bassano dG, and Treviso. He also REALLY talks up Padova's market.

The plot thickens. I can't go wrong, apparently, but I also don't want to be away from Venice too much.

I guess I will just have to plan yet another trip for the whole Veneto region (and fit in Bologna, Modena, Ravenna as well) some other time...

<i><font color=#555555>"I dragged out my old copy of Fred Plotkin's "Italy for the Gourmet Traveler"."</font></i>

It never held as an authority publication and was thought of by many as a pure vanity project. The book is SO OLD, and Italy has changed SO MUCH since the Euro, many of the entries no longer have any relevance. So many restaurants are gone or have changed ownership. But I can understand the value of a good nostalgic read. I still enjoy hearing from Faith Willinger and Maureen Fant.

The Veneto Region is worth exploring, for sure. There are some gems. I would never explore it without a car, and I wouldn't go in the month of December/January. I don't ski.

One could argue that every city in Italy offers some charm, no matter what month you visit. I tend to agree. But for me, the magic really blossoms when the weather is nice and certain foliage is in full bloom. The smell of a place is so important to me, and cold weather has a way of masking.

Travel times rarely match the research. What looks like half-a-day on paper can often be a whole day in reality. And no enthusiastic traveler wishes to allow time to accommodate sheer exhaustion.

I think you are correct, the region deserves its own trip. April/May would be my pick, especially for photography. Rain, and lots of it, is a landscape photographer's best friend.

NYCFS, yes, this screams "spring trip".

My copy is very old - with a faded cover. It is fun to read, though. And I always over-research and rarely do half the things that look interesting.
