POSITANO: TERRACE OR PRIVATE BEACH

Message: Help...
We have reservations for both La Fenice and Villa Rosa. Our reservations at La Fenice are not below the road and therefore we do not have a terrace. We have a terrace at Villa Rosa. So it comes down to private beach versus terrace. Any suggestions?
FYI, this is our honeymoon.

Also, does anyone have any itinerary suggestions for staying in the country on the way to Rome?

I just visted Positano about two weeks ago. I think it must be one of the most beautiful places in the world. My preference would be a terrace overlooking the beautiful sea unless you plan a lot of time on the beach versus sightseeing. Just think, sipping some wonderful limoncello on a warm night with a nice breeze.

Elizabeth -

I've stayed at both places.
When I was at La Fenice I did have the pleasure of one of the rooms below the road - they are very nice, particularly for a honeymoon setting. And it's quiet and fairly secluded.
There's quite a few other La Fenice fans and so, you should be able to get more feedback - and particularly someone who has stayed in the "above the road" rooms.

As for the Villa Rosa, I liked their accommadations as well. They aren't on the beach - they're located on the "upper" side of the road. I did enjoy my stay there a bit more than at La Fenice for the following reasons:
1. LOCATION - it's closer to the main portion of Positano. Given that Positano isn't a really big place, it's not a significant distance. However as you'll be walking alot, (particularly climbing MANY stairs!) it does add up.
2. LOCATION - Villa Rosa is a pleasant 3 star hotel AND it's directly across the street from Le Sirenuse, a much more expensive & plush hotel. I'd definitely recommend a visit to the lounge for pre-dinner drinks - then you can sit in a lovely setting overlooking the Mediterrean.
3. TERRACE - I stayed in room 12, which has a terrace. There's a small table & chairs on which you can have your morning coffee & croissants. Not on the beach, but it does afford a delightful view of the Mediteranean. Do be aware that the rooms (about 4?) along this row have terraces that are adjacent to each other. You're "separated" from your neighbor by an arbor - so the terraces aren't completely private.

I had a great time on both of my visits to Positano; for me, the Villa Rosa edged out La Fenice.
[Oh, but there's nothing like the sounds of the Mediterranean lapping against the rocks].
One final comment - the private beach is rocky - so, if you are thinking white sandy beaches ala Florida/Mexico, then forget it.

Whichever one you chose, it'll be a wonderful trip. Buon viaggio!

A day or two ago I agreed with several here who believe Positano/Amalfi is one of the most beautiful and romantic places on earth. We stayed at the Hotel l'Ancora, next to the Sirenuse, "below the road" (pack light, there's a lot of stairs). We loved our terrace looking out over the sea, and down to the beach and the duomo. It was a postcard. A dream. Yes, the beach is not the white sugar sand of the caribean/pacific. There are a number of good restaurants down there, but also good dining in Amalfi, not far away. We drove by car, and the road is . . well, exciting. I drove it a number of times, because my wife is an Italian pottery nut, and we went back to Vietre su Mar, where there are a number of pottery/ceramic manufacturing facilities. We could actually see the stuff being made/painted. It is beautiful, even from a non-afficionado.
We also drove up to Ravello for a long lunch / afternoon. The music school was in session, and this amazing and beautiful awray of operetic sounds eminated and echoed throughout.
Sorrento was a let down after all that, but a day trip to Capri should be included, depending how much time you have
We drove all the way to Rome in one afternoon, after visiting Pompeii. Did not go to Napoli. Hope this helps. A great place for a honeymoon. Congratulations!

Does anyone know if Villa Rosa has a pool? And which rooms have the best views?
