I prefer Positano for two reasons:
1. It is more charming
2. There is ample bus parking in Amalfi, so all the day-tripper bus tours park there and unload the throngs of people. Parking is almost non-existant in Positano so it always seems less crowded to me.
Also, Positano is right on the water (there is a street between the main section of Amalfi & the water). The walk west of the boardwalk on a cliffside path just above the water is very romantic in the evening in Positano.

rgc,
If you do a search you will see lots of posts on this very topic. We are going in August and after reading everything, we decided on Amalfi, but it doesn't appear to me that there is a hands down winner. I would base it on the hotels you are staying at and the possible side trips you intend to take.
Have a great trip!
