Portugal weather/what to pack
Two nimble 70-year-olds ready and eager for 10 days in Portugal starting next Wednesday. We realize we have not a clue what to bring for the weather. We thought it may be warmer, the forecast indicates 70 or so daytime with chance of rain. I go with a carry-on soft duffel, partner a small wheelie suitcase. We are heading for Albufeira from Lisbon and driving around eating food and hanging out. Just a few tips? It now seems shorts are not needed…sweatshirts? Rain jackets? Thanks very much.

I check the Portugal News daily for current weather news, and they predict that on Wednesday temps will be back up to 30C. You might need those shorts in the Algarve. But yes, do pack a rain jacket as well.

"Layers" is almost a punchline nowadays, but both shorts/long pants; heavy shirts & light shirts; the best of all are fleece vests - - the most flexible of all layers; a light jacket, a heavy jacket. Seriously, if you take some light, thin tops, and have vesty/jackety things to throw on at any time (you can keep them in a backpack) then you are impenetrable.

I see you've already started your trip. I suggest before your next trip you check weatherspark.com for graphs of weather averages and probability of variations around those averages (which is another way of saying climate). This graph is for Lagos.

Yes we are here! Arrived Thursday and two days of intermittent heavy rain in Lisbon.… heavy rain! Also cooler temps with no sun and breeze. It’s OK with us we brought layers and some rain gear, could have done better with shoes but we did not want to bring a bunch of bulky stuff. Dried them out with a hair dryer in the room. Morning and afternoon walking tours courtesy of our hotel were great, a comprehensive look at the layout of the city and historic sites. Must say Corpo Santo Hotel was top notch. Now in Albufeira, trains here are not exactly as precise and on time to the minute as some other nations we have visited, caused some anxiety in picking up a rental car but we made it with 15 minutes left before closing time. All is well that ends well. Now a week here exploring and eating. Thanks for the help!
