Portsmouth & Millenium Bridge

I'm travelling to London in late September and have two questions. 1. Has the Millenium Bridge re-opened? 2. Does anybody have any recommendations about whether a trip to Portsmouth is worthwhile. I would like to see the ships and am willing to make Portsmouth my last night in England so I can take the Portsmouth-Gatwick train to catch my plane.

Any help is appreciated.

The Millennium Bridge is scheduled for re-opening in December.

As for Portsmouth - need more info. How long do you have? Portsmouth is not really doable as a day trip from London. But if you have 2 or 3 days - then yes - you could see Portsmouth, the Solent, maybe the Isle of Wight or New Forest etc.

I assume that you would be spending your last night in Portsmouth giving you about a day in the city. The historic dockyard is cetainly 'doable' in that time though there is indeed a lot to see. If you have time also try and see the Submarine museum in nearby Gosport. Its a pity you will not be there for the last weekend of this month when the second Festival of the Sea is being held, if its as good as the first it promises to be a great event.

Darrel,
Portsmouth can definitely be a day trip from London, if you limit yourself to a few things like touring the historical ships & the Marine museum, & you would still have time for a boat tour around the harbor, & since you are staying overnight - also probably some time to actually see some of the city. Portsmouth is about 1 1/2 hr from London, by train. I have done a number of daytrips from London to Portsmouth & back to London & been able to fit in the above activites, but not able to fit in a trip to Isle of Wright. But I go to Portsmouth for the history.

There was a discussion on this board last week, - I think it was called HMS VICTORY - which had a discussion about Portsmouth. If you want to look back or do a search on Portsmouth, you should be able to find it.

Darrel,My wife & I did Portsmouth as a day trip from London.Took an early train and returned in the afternoon.Saw the Mary Rose and the museum but the best was the HMS Victory. The guided tour of the Victory was superb. It was gived by a very knowledgable and funny retired sailor.

Thanks All for your suggestions and help.

I think I'll do it. My plans are to travel from London to Portsmouth early the day before I leave for home. I'll have a full day there, spend the night and train to Gatwick the next morning.

It won't be enough time to see everything but I've got to see HMS Victory.

Thanks again!
