Pompeii from cruise ship
We will be arriving in Naples mid May by cruise ship and have a long day there, 7a-7p. We would like to spend several hours in Pompeii and hire a guide for part of the time we are in Pompeii. Have looked into a private driver but I can't see spending $300 to have someone drive us there and wait for several hours while we roam around.
I have heard that we could just hire a taxi to take us there. Are there taxis that will do this? Can we count on getting a taxi back to our ship in Naples afterwards? And since we do not speak Italian, will our driver likely speak English? Anyone have a clue what a taxi ride from Naples to Pompeii would run? Thanks!

PS. Know we can do a train but really don't want to do that. Also we know there is a LOT to see in the area but we just want to spend what little time we have in Pompeii.

Thanks Bob, but we know the cruise ship has plenty of tours to Pompeii and surronding areas. None of the stays in Pompeii long enough to suit us- which is why we seek to do it on our own, and looking for advice here.

Petoonya - A taxi between the port and Pompei should be about Euro 50-60.00. Fix a price before you get in.

Personally I would make a note of the train times (they run every 30 mins) back from Pompei - just in case there are no taxis waiting.

Steve

Petoonya-

Get a taxi at the port- Negotiate the fare ROUNDTRIP before you get in-- and tell them you will pay them ON the RETURN portion of the trip--

That way, they will wait for you , not rip you off and leave you stranded....

If you do not make it back to port on time, the ship leaves without you...

You should really consider taking the Circumvesuviana Train to and from Pompei. It's very easy and very, very inexpensive. Just be careful about pickpockets. Take a taxi to the Naples central train station (Napoli Centrale in Piazza Garibaldi: 10 to 15 Euros, five minutes by taxi), then a 40 minute train run to Pompei Scavi (departures every 30 minutes). The Circumvesuviana train runs one floor underground from the Naples central station, and you should be careful to board a train going to Pompei Scavi. At Pompei, the entrance to the ruins is a very short walk from the Pompei Scavi station. On the return to the cruise ship, there are many taxis waiting in queue at Napoli Centrale.
