If it's last Sunday of the month - which is free - I would avoid Pompeii. The last Sunday in May there were 35,000 people through the gate which is beyond ridiculous. If you have a choice, I would take Monday as you will also avoid the weekender locals (who also love visiting their cultural heritage in droves)

We used a private guide for four people. His name is Nello and we contacted him through [email protected] . He was great and it was really nice to have someone who spoke excellent English. His cost was around €120 but that was a couple of years ago. Have fun.

Not the last Sunday, was aware of that, I too was thinking Monday might be better
