Pompei: how long?

How much time will I need to cover Pompei on a day trip? Will a stoppover in Napoli for a couple of hours is worth doing?

Hi
I won't be doing this until late fall, but I've been pestering a lot of people here for suggestions and information.
If you do a Search on this forum
for Naples and for Pompeii, you will find a lot of information, including exactly how to do the trains.
The gist of it is, it's about 3 hours travel time Rome to Pompeii Scavi, including changing trains in Naples
Recommended time in Pompeii ranges from two hours to five hours, depending on your interests and stamina
In Naples, the Archeological Museum is very highly recommended, as some of the original artifacts from Pompeii and Herculaneum were moved to the museum

Not sure where your day trip will begin or end, but unless you are an archaelogist or a student writing a term paper, give yourself about 3 hours at Pompeii. That is enough to cover the major sites - and it is really hot in summer. My suggestion is to proceed from there to Sorrento, spend the night, and go to Capri the next day by boat from Sorrento.

If you are really interested in Archeology it would be better with the timeyou have to go to Herculaneum, it takes andn entire day for Pompeii..you don't want to rush through it.

You can easily do Pompei in a day. However, make arrangements in advance for a private guide. It is an absolute must! Otherwise you spend all your time trying to read the guidebook and you'll miss many of the highlights and stories. My 2 teenage boys, tired of touring and sick of the sights by then, said it was their favorite part of Italy and they'd actually do it again! The group tours are crowded and its hard to hear and see.
