My husband and I are arriving on Athens on 6 May and was thinking about hiring a car to drive around Croatia from Athens until 14 June. we have to go back to Athens. we are both 60 years old.

Is that too long
Is it better to catch a plane to one of the cities or go by hire care
Really no idea where to go on Croatia. I noticed the itenary for the theaterlover but it is only for 3 weeks.
Does anyone have any more suggestions for the identify.

I forgot to mention about accomadation. I read there a a number of people renting out from their home. What are they like.

We prefer to stay in apartment style places. Should we book before we go or wait and do it when we arrive. Especially as we have not planned the itenary yet.

@ annmary -- I, personally, would not want to spend 15 hours plus in a car to go (one way) from Athens to even the southern most tip of Croatia. It sounds like you really need to do some homework. I found the Rough Guide particularly helpful when planning my time in the area, but really, ANY guidebook should prove immensely helpful to you. And yes, many people stay in rooms (called sobe) rented out by homeowners. As with anything, they range for outstanding to awful. And as with anywhere, only you can decide whether you want to book ahead, even if it "locks you in," or wait until you arrive and risk having to pay more than you would otherwise pay or have to stay somewhere that isn't to your liking.

@ theatrelover -- I don't know why people have chosen to tag onto your thread rather than starting their own, and hope you don't mind that I am responding....

@ Millstrip I agree with kja, but please start a new thread if you need more advice about accommodations and such--shared posts like this tend to result in confusion.

Message to rialtogrl (Shannon). Thank you so much for the recommendation of the apartments in Hvar. We have booked an apartment with Andro. He only had the two bedroom apartments available for our dates in June but the price is so reasonable and the apartments look so lovely, we booked it and will have lots of room to spread out. I thank you so much for all your help.

First, I want to thank all of you for your help. We returned last week from our 3 1/2 weeks in Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia-Herzogovenia and the advice you all gave me made the trip as wonderful as it was. And Shannon, I must especially thank you for the information on Andro's apartment in Hvar. We loved it and he is such a wonderful person. His mother even made us strudel! It was so hard to leave. Thank you so much for that wonderful experience. I will be posting a trip report as soon as I can.

I am so glad you enjoyed your stay at Andro's place. His mother is adorable. I love going back there and will be back in September for more strudel and also Andro's dad's cherry brandy which is a great accompaniment! Looking forward to the rest of your report!

It was wonderful. A beautiful part of the world with warm and friendly people, delicious food and fascinating history. And being there during the Euro Cup turned my husband and me into Croatian soccer fans. You were all so generous with your time and ideas and I really appreciated it because it made our trip better than it would have been.

Shannon: Andro mentioned you were coming back in September. Lucky you!

I was in Croatia for part of the last Euro cup, so I totally understand. They love their football. Did you know Andro is a coach of a kids team? They practice, and play, in the football field on the way down to town.

I didn't know that. He was so kind. He drove us to meet our Secret Hvar tour (which was a wonderful way to spend a day on Hvar) and offered to drive us up to the fortress.

Hi theatrelover,

Just wanted to ask if you took the car ferry from Drvenik to Sucuraj? If so, how was your experience?
