please help w. itinerary change - germany / switz / austria

we are departing soon to germany and will headquarter in munich, train to salzburg, drive round bavaria.

unfortunately had to drop zurich as 4 hour train ride from munich too much of a time investment.

can anyone suggest nice switzerland day trip destination from munich? interested in nice alps views, villages, etc. train or auto OK.

Anywhere in Switzerland is going to be 4 hours or more from Munich. I suggest you go to the Austrian Alps--the Innsbruck region.

Why does it have to be Switzerland? Head to Innsbruck and some villages on the way. You won't match that in Switzerland without going beyond Zurich.

oh dear...i had the sense that eastern switzerland might offer an interesting destination just a couple of hours from munich. sounds like we'll need to re-think this somewhat or reconsider zurich. thanks for your replies, best, jfm.

Hi jfm,

Also agree that you should hold off on the Swiss alps for another trip. Even when you get to Zurich, the alps will be a few hours away -- the city lies in a plain, next to a lake, etc. There are some rolling hills, but no alps.

Even in eastern Switzerland, the high mountains will be some distance: Scuol is 6 hours from Munich, and Chur is about 5.

Try to schedule another visit just for Switzerland!
