I have stayed in both places, and totally agree with hampton's assessment of Sorrento. It doesn't have the same charm or beauty as Positano. While we had a good time there, and enjoyed the ease of transportation to Pompeii, Capri, and Naples, I probably would not stay there again. Sorrento is a medium-sized city that caters to large tour groups, and has its share of noise, traffic, even a fish n chips joint or two ( not that there's anything wrong with that!). It just didn't seem as authentic as some of the other towns on the Amalfi Coast. And yes, BTW, Sorrento is NOT on the Amalfi Coast, but only 30 minutes away from it by car or a little more by boat...

Hi illini,
have you thought about staying in an apartment in Rome? you get a lot more for your money.
this is the link to the apartment we stayed in last week:
http://lacasadiclelia.webs.com/
for two people it is about €100 per night and it's in a perfect postion for getting around Rome [look for the castel san angelo end of the via coronari if you want to google it]; alternatively they have an even cheaper studio flat, though I don't know exactly where that is. it has a/c, and is surroundd by every sort of shop and facility you could possibly need, and it was very quiet.
IMHO definitely better than any of the hotels in your price-range that you are looking at in Rome, and catherine, the owner, is very easy to deal with.
otherwise there are loads of agencies with apartments in Rome.
have a great trip,
regards, ann

Could use some last minute help here. Booked the air tickets, 2 round trip non-stops chicago-rome through United. (Was about to book Alitalia but the horrid reviews scared me back to United) They were expensive but only getting worse, so I just bought them.
Do you think this schedule is too ambitious? Due to availability restraints in the hotels we originally wanted, our schedule needs to be altered a bit.
We will be spending 15 nights in Italy, for sure. The last 7 nights will be spent in Rome, at the Nicolas Inn. I really like the sound of that place.
The villa rosa in Positano is where we wanted to start our trip, but they only have the first 4 nights available. If we took that, we were thinking we could do 4 nights in Positano, 2 nights in Capri, 2 nights in Sorrento, then 7 in Rome. Is that too much to handle during a honeymoon? Should we look at other establishments in Positano that can accommodate a longer stay?
Proposed schedule
4 nights Positano
2 nights Capri
2 nights Sorrento
7 nights Rome
It sounds like it might be a lot of moving around.

I think 4 nights in Positano is plenty. Positano is not a big of a town and if you were not staying there, you could see it one day.
As for your proposed schedule, it's fine - but you should consider switching 2 nights in Naples for your 2 nights in Sorrento. It would be a major crime, IMHO, to spend 15 days in Southern Italy and not spend a few days seeing all that Naples has to offer.

illini1022,
Unless you've changed your travel dates, the Villa Rosa Town House Suite in Positano shows availability for June 10-17, A standard double room booked through Venere, com goes for 175e per night. It's on via Cristoforo Colombo. Is this the same hotel?

Alright, snap decision. 6 nights in Positano. Should I spend them at Villa Rosa for a standard room with sea view at 185 euro/night or should I go for a jacuzzi room at Albergo California at 180 euro/night.

Just wanted to give a final update. Took everything into consideration, and finally settled on this.
6 nights in Positano, Villa Rosa
2 nights in Capri, Il Giardino dell'Arte
7 nights in Rome, Nicolas Inn
Got it all booked, got flight booked (probably wasted money on upgrading to economy +, but I'm 6'5...)
Thanks for all the help!

Sounds wonderful illini1022!! Positano is one of my favorite places in the world! It's not often I think about visiting a place I've already been to since I have a long list of places I hope to get to, BUT, I would go back to Positano in a heartbeat! It is so beautiful! Congratulations!

illini1022,
We did almost the same trip a few years back, and I think you have it down perfectly! Great weather that time of year; and will allow you to do excursions from a really great couple of bases.
Don't forget, if you have the time, to take the boat tour along the Amalfi coast with Salvatore -- see http://www.gennaroesalvatore.it/index.html
Our family took this trip on the recommendations made by this board and it was the highlight of our trip. You can even see me and some of the photos I took that I sent them at the above link!

Thanks to everyone for the amazing help you've provided. My wife & I are finally going to Italy for her 50th Birthday. We're taking "Bob the Navigator"s advice, and going to splurge at the Hotel Santa Catarina on the Amalfi Coast for 5 nites. We also will visit Rome for 5 nights.
Flying into Rome, would you guys say to do Rome 1st or 2nd? We are also looking for a romantic, special place in Rome for a few nights, possibly near the Steps. Any suggestions for 4 star hotels? Thanks

hi t'bill
personally, I favour the "getting the travelling over first" school of travel, especially if you are arriving in Rome in the early morning. use the rest of the day getting to the Amalfi coast, relax and acclimatise to Italy there, then go back to Rome for the 2nd half of your trip.
this also means that you're in the right place for your flight home.

T'bill,
I've nver done that particular trip, but there are loads of people here who have - in fact I remember a recent thread about that very subject. you have a number of choices: train all the way, train then pick up a car somewhere en route, drive all the way, private taxi.
Bob the navigator is usually very good on that sort of detail, plus hotel recs. I've only ever stayed in apartments in Rome so i can't help with hotels there, I'm afraid.
regards, ann

Do Rome last, and try to fly into Naples for arrival--may not be any more $$$ and much more convenient. We are doing that in May. Failing that, train to Salerno if you are going to Amalfi and either take the Metro del Mare ferry to Amalfi or hire a private driver. Better yet, ask the hotel how they can help. You are paying them enough to warrant some help.
