Yes indyhiker, please sent me a link to the apartment. When traveling with someone else I am more likely to stay in an apartment but for safety thought I should do a hotel or B&B this time. It would be optimal to have the owner nearby.

If you are going a bit earlier, It have a couple of suggestions. Stresa on the westerns shore of Lago Maggiore could be a good option. Short way from Milano Malpensa with train, very scenic town and a lot of good options for hiking. Also good for exploring the rest of Lago Maggiore, either with a boat or bus/train.

Also I can see on a rail map that towns like Orvieto and Arezzo are not a very long train journey from Rome. I see that others have mentioned towns in the same region.
You raise one of the concerns that has been looping ceaselessly through my head. Budget-wise I can get more bang for my buck by traveling later but I definitely don't want to be cold. One of my great joys is eating outside and that must happen! I do know that any place I've been in Europe has been quite well set up for dining outdoors in cold weather BUT I'd like to avoid that (sides down on the canopy, thick blankets, fabulous heaters). I appreciate that you checked the map for train journey length. I really don't want to get off a plane and spend another half day getting to my final destination.

Bevagna, that's a novel suggestion; thank you zebec! Not too far from Rome which is good. I'm assuming you either live there or have visited. I'll review your posts to check for any recommendations.

I am expert in Alba area... there you can have great wine, truffles with the dedicated fair, visiit of wineries, organize mountan bike tours (even e-bike if you are not trained..) then can spend 2 days in Turin to visit great museum (egyptian and royal family)... hiking can be done anywhere, probably best area is cinque terre... other options can be bike tour of the laguna veneta, maybe why not spend a week in Umbria or 2 weeks in Sicily or have 2 weeks in campania to spend 12 hours in Pompei.. have fun. AH was forgetting... Alba is the place of the special local raw meat... try it,
As I progress through responding to replies and thinking about budget and weather I'm thinking more about central to not-so-far south. Campagna looks promising and the thought of experiencing Pompeii and Herculaneum is tempting! We spent the day at Ostia Antica during one of the Rome trips.

Lecce has become a destination for another trip; it's just too far this time. I absolutely am sold on the area and it would be great in combination with Abruzzo where my father's family is from. I've been planning that trip in my head for quite awhile aware that I'd want to pair it with another destination. You've solved that, thank you bilboburgler!

Camolgi looks wonderful! I didn't mention the ocean/seaside in my original post but this checks all the boxes...except about the time of year I'm traveling and time to get there. Saving it as a destination for the future.

Thank you TDudette, I will read your posts as I am quite interested in that part of Italy. Hopefully my son and I will be able to do our trip together in the not too distant future and I'm always reviewing posts here for recommendations; this will help narrow the search.

Maybe if you want to think about it last minute when you can see the weather but not something to set your heart on in advance. If you're thinking October expect high hotel prices. I know it's not even June but I bet many of the more economical locations have already seen bookings. I've had a booking for November in Venice since mid winter.

Florence isn't on your list. Neither is Bologna.
I just knew there would be a question about budget which is hard to define now that prices are insane! I agree that it is late to be booking accommodations and that is a worry. When our trip was cancelled last June we tried to rebook for the fall and 2 of the 3 places we were staying were fully booked. This is going to be a hassle for sure.

Where to stay?

I noticed that you haven’t spent time in Tuscany so that is one option. If you don’t want to stay in Florence, try Lucca, Pisa or Arezzo. I would avoid an Agriturismo on this trip as you will probably need a car..

If you would like to do something that’s slightly different, you could try a one week activity holiday. Eg. cookery, painting, pilates. I’ve done a couple of Flavours cookery holidays (not gourmet) and they have a good balance between cooking, sightseeing and relaxation. Group size is about 15 and they pick you up from the airport/ rail station. They offer several locations in Italy.

The Amalfi Coast is one of my favorite places in Italy. Gorgeous coastlines, beautiful food and plenty of smaller towns and villages where you can have authentic local experiences. I loved Sorrento, Positano, and Conca dei Marini (where I spent most of my time on the beach). I felt very safe on my trip here as it's still enough of a tourist hotspot not to feel out of place. Keep us posted with where you decide to go!

A year ago when my aforementioned niece was finishing up her semester in Siena her mother and sister joined her and they spent time in Positano and had nothing but glowing reviews. Have you been in the fall? I wonder about the season impacting what's open for eating as that is a prime objective of my visit!

Yes, of course Tuscany is a desired destination (actually I want to experience every part of Italy somehow some way) and I have considered an activity-based vacation. I've never been one for group travel but can see the benefit, I'll check it out!

You might look at Salerno. My guess is that it would be budget friendly and blissfully not swamped with tourists.

I've never done group travel, but have taken a few week-long Italian classes at schools in Venice and in Rome. Typically you have class in the morning, perhaps 9am-12:30 or 1pm, then you are free in the afternoons to sightsee, etc. And of course there are schools in cities and towns around the country. Torino, for example (which I agree would be fantastic, perhaps paired with Alba to get more of a smaller town vibe).

[And just a note because I noticed it misspelled a couple times above and you may want to research: it's Camogli not Camolgi.]

I’ve done both - organised one day activities myself and done some small group like the Flavours ones I mentioned. Both are good experiences, but I really enjoyed my one week cookery course in Sicily based near Ragusa. (I also did a shorter one near Venice which was good too.) The shared experience was great yet I also had some me time. We had a private demo in the kitchen at the chocolatier in Modica and I still remember the fun of watching ricotta being made and eating it warm! Other visits included eating ice cream in Noto and watching a Greek tragedy in Syracuse.

UPDATE! My Delta credit is good for travel through 2024 and my son is available for a trip in March. I'm going to purchase a ticket now/soon because the credit needs to be redeemed in 2023 and start planning for March. I love that if the price drops I can rebook without penalty and have another credit.

Way, way back someone mentioned truffles in Alba. While it is possible to find truffles in the last half of September, the best truffles are found in October and November.

Now the trip is in March? I'd probably be looking at Sicily.

FYI, Easter will be March 31, 2024.

March IMHO means picking one of the larger cities. Even with Easter being early the smaller centres might be too sleepy. In addition March weather does have a reputation of unpredictability .
