We rented an apartment in Rome this past October through VRBO for the first time ever. The owner wanted a small deposit (100E) and the remaining balance upon arrival, after viewing property. We wired the deposit to the account to reserve the apartment and we paid the balance upon arrival. I would not hesitate to rent from this owner again or through VRBO for that matter. Unless it is a scam, one bad review does so much damage that I don't think owners are willing to take that chance. This was our experience and thank god it was a good one.

Billoburgler and annhig, Janisj wrote, "But you certainly are fulfilling his role"
That was not chatting or about old friends, it was addressed to me and it is quite specific. So I don't see any reason why I should not ask what role.
Dickie-GR, I have no idea what, "Janis is a smart arse as you out it," means. I guess English is not your first language. Perhaps you could try again.
Janisj, you have not had the courtesty to answer my question. What role?
It seems clear to me that it was intended as an insult. I am giving you the opportunity to convince me it was not. Otherwise I will pursue it with the moderators of this forum.

Oooooooohhhhhhhh...scary! Not.
You obviously don't have the backstory here or even know what people are (innocently) talking about. Nothing was intended as an insult and it's hard to even figure out how you thought it might be. You'll get nowhere with the monitors. Janisj has been posting here for years and years and has consistently been a source of very fine information for hundreds, probably thousands, of posters. I'd just drop it if I were you, as you appear to be clueless as to the context.

You cannot speak about something you do not do (book after arrival) with any authority<<<
Ditto. You cannot speak about something you do not do (prebook) with any authority.
cmeyer54 - You got your question and answered and more! Never dull around here. Good luck.

Why don't you guys let janisj speak for herself. I'm sure she'll come back and respond on Monday when she's back on her employer's time.
Today's Saturday. No doubt she's busy pretending she's racing a Mini Cooper on her Playstation. Gran Turismo 5 is a good game for roleplayers.
So realistic you can hardly tell a screenshot from the real thing. Makes a great way to add a photo to your Profile.

Uh - don't work . . . Don't need to. Everything is on MY dime.
I don't race the mini Cooper (it is just my road car).. But I have raced sports cars over the years from Formula Fords to Porsches to a Caterham7 to a little Spitfire . . . (and had a Morgan I didn't race)
I don't owe you or anyone else an explanation.

@ dulci, your method may work for you....
but we are a family of 5 people - and have very specific location requirements. I want to be central Paris, near the metro... or central London... or whatever. Being a family of 5 complicates things and automatically massively reduces the amount of apartments.
We are typically on a limited vacation - anywhere from 10 days to 2 weeks (if lucky). I don't have a day to spend viewing properties. And I'm certainly not dragging kids and luggage around with me! We have places to go, people to see, and ice cream to eat!
Off-season in New Mexico (or was it Arizona?) with a car is a totally different story.
Now.. having said that... I am no fan of vrbo for many of the reasons above. I view airbnb as a clearinghouse like vrbo. I typically rent from an agency. I also prefer the protection of paying with a credit card. Do we pay more for those conveniences? Absolutely. Totally worth my time and peace of mind. I've been extremely happy with most apartments - but I do a ton of research in advance.
glad your system works for you - but it isn't for everyone.
