Mel,
Did you ever get your water back? We stayed at the same hotel several years ago and they "accidentally" moved us out of our room while we were on a day tour. We came back late to find all of our stuff in storage! From that point on we referred to the hotel as "The Fractured and Sufferin'"

Diane,
I agree with you on the minibar prices in Italy. We usually don't use the minibar, but in Italy we used it every day. What a treat!

Forgot to answer the question!

We've never been charged for something not used. A few times we were not charged for something we did use!

Deb:
They didn't take the water, just removed it from the fridg and left it out. We never stayed at the Fractour again, either. Great location, but the tiniest room I've ever stayed in in Europe (and I've been in some small ones!). We decided they spent all their money on the opulent lobby!
We also saw a really nasty dinner switch they pulled in the dining room, but that's for another post...

So what are their prices like? If they are anything like the Toronto Downtown Hilton - $2.50 and up for 75-cent candy bars, etc.- I wouldn't touch them either. The Toronto Hilton also did the basket of goodies trick. I didn't use their coffee maker because it wasn't clear whether the coffee was complementary or part of the highway robbery. (Not to pick on the Hilton - it's a good hotel, and the other Toronto hotels are probably equally usurious.) Even though my company would pay these charges, I refuse on principle to pay a 400% markup - the Hotel rate was bad enough.

Hello,

watch out for another thing. What happened to me was that I actually wanted to drink something from the mini-bar and all bottles were empty and refilled with tap water. The previous guest must have been very thirsty and the maid didn`t realize the fake because he "pseudo"-sealed them again. At my departure the Hilton tried to charge me for every single item. We had a "nice" chat about that and I got the charges for the last night deleted from the bill. Since then I always check the mini-bar upon arrival and call the front-desk if there`s something wrong with it.

Miriam

We always empty ours and use none of it. We buy drinks and anything else we want at local stores. Always cheaper and you get what you want.

My story is from the Four Seasons Maui- they saw us carrying loads of goodies from the local store (wine, chips etc) and asked us if I would like my minibar emptied. We said yes and then we took to the price list to compare how much we saved - $350 - not bad.
