This is very tiring and involves a lot of climbing, both inside and outside. You should reconsider visiting this castle.

We stayed in Riquewihr in June of this year. Our apartment was on the 300m long main street of the old town (see grandmere's first post above) on which there are many excellent restaurants.I highly recommend staying in old town Riquewhir. The main street is on an incline though. If you have a week in Alsace consider a few nights in Strasbourg after Riquewhir and before Provence.

Where are you staying near St Saturnin? If it is at Mas Perreal you will have a fantastic time!

So glad to read you are considering Strasbourg. We are a "Senior" couple that generally avoids larger cities, but we absolutely love a day or two in Strasbourg. You could spend a night before picking up your car at the trains station area.

A bit below your hotel budget but very adequate, meeting the elevator/aircondtioning requirement...we always stay at the IBIS hotel at the Gare (careful, there are several IBIS in Strasbourg and you want the train station, not the others) Many of the rooms have a view of the beautiful Place and the ultra-modern train station façade. The staff is very helpful, but breakfast pretty standard...we eat elsewhere.

If you want a more upscale hotel, google search, as the place in front of the station is an ideal location having escalator and elevator service at the train station, which also connects to the metro. Lots of shops and a nice tourist office at the train station. They will help you with maps and what metro stops you take to see the cathedral, etc. The city transportation also has a very affordable all-day transport ticket valid for 2-3 people that you just purchase at one of the many kiosks.

A great way to see the city for those wishing to conserve their energy is via the river cruise--some are covered, some are "open". Well worth it. We've only done the day cruise to be able to see the sights, though I'd imagine night is beautiful too.

We spent a weekend outside of Colmar in the small walled village of Turckheim and prefer it over the other 3 we have stayed in that others have mentioned, Ricquewhir, Obernai and Colmar.

Turckheim is surrounded by vinyards but is pretty much flat itself, with no great inclines. All the charm and history and wine to try like the others, only more "abordable" as the French would say.

We had a lovely stay at this hotel. No elevator, but they have little bungalows that border a small private garden square area. We stayed here in hot weather, but the old thick walls made airconditioning not an issue.

Thank you so much everyone! Yes, we are considering staying in Strasbourg either when we first arrive or just before we depart Alsace.

Yes, Mas Perreal is our B & B in Saint Saturnin-Les-Apt.

Update: I have finally decided and booked 2 nights Strasbourg, 3 nights Riquewihr. We'll pick up rental car as we leave Strasbourg, return it in Colmar and train from Colmar to Avignon.
Thanks to those who recommended staying in Strasbourg a few days. I's sure we'll be glad we didn't miss it!
