Planning Northern Italy trip

Hey all,
My wife and I are planning our return trip to Italy from August 27, 2007 to Sepetmebr 8th,2007. Our trip in 2004 (for my 60th Bday) was from Rome south including Capri,Sorrento and Sicily. This time (for my wifes 60th Bday) we want to see Northern Italy. Our award tickets are booked into and out of Venice and cannot be changed. We have booked two days 09/2 and 09/3 in Varenna and would love to stay at Dimora Storica Villa Il Poggiale near Florence for 08/29 to 09/01. Any suggestions beyond that? I plan to rent a car in Florence to use for most of the trip. Probably train from Venice to Florence.

Hi C,

Only the one night in Venice? For a birthday?

Any reason for not renting the car in Venice and driving to your villa?

I am not sure about the sequence. Why not go to Varenna from Venice then to Florence? That way you can get the car and see Tuscany before returning to Venice.

We can add Venice to beginning or end of the vacation and I thought end to celebrate her Bday in Venice on the canal. Any thoughts on special hotel or B&B? Need to fill in a couple of days around Lake Com visit.
