Planning a trip to Italy 1st time-Tour/Alone/Cruise?
Hello Folks-
It's been a lifetime mission to visit Italy. My husband is addicted to the Carribean. So finally this April were going. Now, I'm trying to figure out on HOW to go. Alone, on a group tour, cruise?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

There's been some lengthy discussions of this very topic - almost identical question - in the last couple of days. It'd be worth your while to use the Text Search box and/or just scroll back for it.

Thread "First Italy Trip" at http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34448316
may be the post which TuckH is referring to.
For my own two cents, I'd definitely nix the cruise option. Not that I'm against cruising; rather that's not a good way to truly see Italy. You'll find a majority of the visitors to this forum are do-it-yourselfers when it comes to visiting Italy. If you're someone who prefers to arrange their own schedule, then the escorted tour may not be your cup of tea.

I debated this myself last year. My 10 year old daughter and I spent 10 days in Italy. We went on our own and it was the best decision I made! I studied on this forum for hours and months and studied numerous guide books. With what I learned the trip went off without a hitch.
There is not a cruise or a tour group that can possibly give you "your trip".
Only you can do that.
I would advise learning a few phrases and polite greetings. Decide on exactly which areas you want to see and start reading. Planning the trip is half the fun!
Whatever you decide, have a wonderful time.

LizetteMarie,
Truly ANY way you go will be wonderful! We did it a bit backwards, perhaps. We took a cruise last September from Venice and saw many of the ports. But we fell in love (as many others do) with Venice, and by the time we left Sorento, we decided we would leave Florence and Rome for the next time. We loved every minute of our cruise. And it's a good way for single people to travel and "taste" the area.
But we were bitten hard by the Italy bug, and in March we flew to Rome and spent 15 days touring Rome, Florence and Venice on your own. So you can do it anyway that you are comfortable. Have a wonderful trip! You will love Italy.

If you enjoy cruising, it's a wonderful way to do Italy. Example: fly to Rome, stay there for a few days, then take a Windstar cruise from Civitavecchia to Venice, stay in Venice for a few days. You'll visit the Amalfi Coast, Sicily, Dubrovnik on the cruise.
