And you can take a regional train to the Chillon Castle or a lake boat from Montreux, Vevey, etc. i believe

I think the train line actually runs right under the castle - weird

An alternative for the Chateau would be to take the boat one-way and walk the other. We did the boat and enjoyed it very much.

Have a wonderful trip.

Yes taking a Swiss lake steamer, even if only for this brief trip is an experience not to be missed IMO - some boats are decades old - some are still paddlewheel steamers i believe - from Montreux-Vevey a popular boat ride goes across Lac Leman to Evian-les-Bains in France (bring passport), a swank spa town with a large Evian water plant lakeside and a spiffy casino - popular evening cruises lets you see the cities around the lake surrealistically all lit up.

ttt - i'm still curious... since the LAKE is "under" Chillon, so I don't see how the train tracks could be there as well.

someone can correct me but i have seen a picture of the train tracks going under a portion of the castle or the rock the castle may be on on the east side of the castle. I've been over that mainline and think i remember the tracks going under a portion of it

but am not sure now - confirm or contradict? thanks

I remember crossing the tracks to get into the castle so I'd say next to, but not below.

I took the boat to Chillon and train back... Boat comes out front short walk to the castle. Train is behind the castle as far as I remember...

We had an interesting tour of the castle but my favorite part was arriving by water and seeing the castle just ahead.

thanks Gruezi - guess train would not have been built under even a portion of the castle

i do remember a picture on a Eurail brochure years ago showing the train going by the castle - perhaps there were a metal screen over the train or whatever that made it seem going thru - but thanks for settling that in my mind. Glad you had a swell trip.

The train tracks are about 10 feet away from the Chateau, most definitely do not go under or right next to. There is a dock for the boat right next to the Chateau but the Belle Epoque steamers are taken out of the water for the winter. Pretty soon I think.

I will be in Montreux and area the beginning of Sept. I also appreciate all these tips! I'm getting excited! Staying at Suisse Majestic 4 nights and Geneva the last night. Hope to visit Vevey, Gruyeres and either Lausanne or Wengen. I love Swiss trains and find them incredibly relaxing.

Vicky - I stayed at the Suisse Majestic - be sure to ask for a room on the lake side of the hotel. Worth every penny.

Vicky,

In Sept. I vote for Wengen. Lausanne will not be so different from you other destinations. Wengen is the opportunity for seeing some amazing scenery.

then by all means head to Wengen - the train ride itself is so awesome - three separate trains - one to Interlaken-Ost (east) a mainline train from anywhere in Switzerland practically, including the official Golden Pass scenic train - then change to a toylike mountain train to Lauterbrunnen and there change yet to a tinier train to Wengen - if you love Swiss trains you will love the Jungfrau Region with so many toy-like, to me at least, a train nut, to hop - Swiss Pass covers fare to Wengen in full.

This post is from 2009.

The blue/yellow train from Interlaken Ost to Lauterbrunnen is NOT toy-like.

The trains from Lauterbrunnen-Kleine Scheidegg or Grutschalp-Murren or the train from Wilderswil to Schynige Platte can be described as toy-like.
