Plaka Hotel?

Yes we stayed there when we were trying to save money. I'm afraid I'd have to describe it as a bit of a dump. My husband says "not great" and "quite basic". The staff could best be described as inconsistent, at least when we were there. The night clerk was most helpful, pleasant and kind - someone we'll not forget. I'd like to forget the younger fellow on during the day though. He was arrogant, indifferent, and insufferable and spent much of his time chatting to a (creepy) buddy. He tried charging us for something we had already paid for, so if you stay, keep your paperwork handy.

The rooftop area was too grubby for us to want to use but I think the breakfasts downstairs were OK.

What it does have going for it is location - views of the Acropolis and near enough to walk to the top and to Syntagma square. Many restaurants are just up the hillside. We were glad we chose the Plaka area to base ourselves.

Would I stay there again? No. I would try a newer hotel across from the park near Syntagma Square which, unfortunately, I can't remember the name of. The staff there didn't seem terribly friendly either but I would expect the rooms to be nicer. The back rooms may have views of the Acropolis too.
yes, i stayed there in september of this year. It is a dump, the staff were unhelpful, the rooms not very comfortable, the breakfast appalling - however it is cheap and central.

I would agree with April and try and get somewhere else if possible

We visited Athens in July 98 and stayed at 4-star Hotel Amalia. Very concvenient location, 5-min walking to Plaka, Syntagma, etc., with all ammenities (specially central air conditioning which in the summer is a must) and very helpful staff. It's not an hotel, say, with a Greek atmosphere and though it appears to be a tour groups choice, the staff is big enough to handle it quite well. Excellent breakfast. We payed about $80/double.
Paulo

In Mar '98, we stayed at the Hotel Attalos, Athinas 29, ph 1-3212-801, fax 1-3243-124 and had very good rooms (we were in 505 at the beginning of our trip and then in 605 when we returned to Athens at the end, 605 was better). We had a big balcony w/views of both the Acropolis & Lycabettus Hill. Room 606 is even better, it's a corner room w/even bigger balcony.

Our rooms were very clean, nice, phones, bath, a/c. The staff was most helpful (one of the guys looked just like Mel Gibson). We paid 10,000 dm ($31.25), Mar 98. Hotel is two blocks from Monastiraki metro and the Plaka, also near the meat market. Wonderful location, can walk to everything! They have a website--http://www.greecetravel.com:8001/attalos/

We would not hesitate to stay there again.

Happy travels,
Sandy
