Try the Fita Hotel. Very close to the museums with a friendly staff and wonderful breakfast. The rooms were basic but clean and comfortable. We would happily return.

ticadonita, please don't rent through AirB&B or HomeAway. They are a scourge in Amsterdam (as they are in Barcelona and Paris). By the look of it on Streetview this is almost certainly housing that would have been part of the social housing stock in Amsterdam, but has now been removed from that, driving up waiting times for a dwelling place for Amsterdam inhabitants. Please don't be the partial cause of that problem.

Have not hotels also displaced locals from housing? And corporations buying up canalside properties for business offices? I recall when a large new chain hotel went up near Central Station -just up the street from the Flying Dutchman - my 'local' in old times in Amsterdam and they demolished centuries-old flats, just keeping the old facade -should we also boycott such hotels who displace locals and drive housing prices thru the roof.

Yes airbnb should not be allowed to virtually change flats to hotels but bona fide folks who actually reside in them and have a spare room to let out may also benefit and be financially able to stay in Amsterdam proper with rising housing prices. Hard to tell which is which and IMO it is up to the City of Amsterdam to crack down - don't blame the average tourist looking for a reasonably priced place to stay in hotel expensive Amsterdam.

Many may not be able to afford to stay in Amsterdam and them being able to do so benefits many segments of the local economy, including small mom and pop businesses.

Why has not Amsterdam cracked down on this seemingly illegal activity? And therein lies the source of your condemnation IMO not the average tourist.

No PalenQ, not on this scale. A scale now so vast that the City Gov is taking action. As I said, I looked at the property on street view: it's in a row with other controlled rent properties, and I know this, because I know the area well. Most of De Pijp (where this property is, not in the museum quarter, whatever that is) is like this.

If they can't afford to stay in Amsterdam, they shouldn't come. And also, there's been a study as to the economic benefits of tourism to the city: result: the benefit is negligible. Especially for the "mom and pop businesses" as you so endearingly call them.

Amsterdam is cracking down now. One reason why I would advise not to rent through AirBnB or HomeAway or such. The number of inspection staff has been quadrupled, there is an active program of encouraging tenants to report AirBnB etc activity etc.

As usual, you comment without much knowledge, based on experiences of decades ago.

This increased attention has been mounting since 2013

I agree with everything Menachem says.
Book a hotel. Do you want self-catering? Try the Student Hotel, opposite the already mentioned Volkshotel.

If they can't afford to stay in Amsterdam, they shouldn't come>

Is this a Donald Trump quote?

But what you explain makes sense to me - these things can get out of hand in a money grab. Good the City is cracking down and I especially am familiar with De Pijp and its unique old working-class architecture.

I now stay in Haarlem because I cannot afford Amsterdam's equivalent accommodation and because after staying in Amsterdam so so many years I savor a more real Dutch town. Folks on a budget should consider Haarlem - a cute canal-laced regional town just a 20-minute or so train ride away.

I am sorry to continue the problem, Menachem. I don't have to rent this woman's apartment and I won't. It is 375 E. for 3 nights so I can still go to the Muse Hotel that I asked about in the beginning of this thread.
We have used Airbnb all over Europe and been very happy with the places. Don't want to get in the middle of a controversy like this, however. Thanks for all the info.
Now, I will ask if it is a good idea to buy the Amsterdam Card or just buy individual tickets online for museums we want to see. Thanks for all your experience.
Oh, we can afford to come to Amsterdam. We do not have Trump's budget , however. I have always liked to save on our sleeping and use money for a nice dinner or jazz club.

The National Museum Card is cheaper and covers 400+ museums and sights all over The Netherlands. It gives priority entrance at busier ones. And it is valid also at the Anne Frank House and all over the NL -I went into many smaller museums and churches with it that I would not have if I had to pay.

As for trams -central Amsterdam is imminently walkable - most folks will take just a few a day at most.

Thank you, PalenQ. This sounds much more like what we would use. Ever been to any Jazz Clubs in Amsterdam?

The Bim Huis is Amsterdam's legendary Jazz House -there are others but I am not familiar with them.

Has anyone ever stayed at the Muse Hotel? It has good ratings on Booking.com for the price, but I would still like to hear from someone on this site.
Can you suggest a hotel for around $400 for 3 nights in Amsterdam? Thank you.

We stayed at Hotel Residence le Coin a few years ago, and liked it a lot. Large rooms, kitchenette, great location.
