Places to stay around La Roque Gageac in Perigord

We stayed at three places in the area. The first was La Manoir de la Malartrie. The is an old chateau B & B very close (walking distance) to town. Pluses-an elegant chateau close to town. Minuses-It's expensive (250 euros at least) and breakfast, while very good, is extra. Host was very nice nad helpful. no dinner or lunch served.

Second place we stayed was "Hotel Perigord," a contemporary hotel just a little outside of La Roque. This is a decent contemporary hotel with 2 swimming pools. I had a sense it caters to larger groups. Not very expensive (120 euros?) but not very charming either. The people at the desk were helpful. Serves dinner and lunch.

Now the high point, where we stayed 5 nights. A B & B about 5 miles outside of La Roque in a cute very small town. It is called "La Belle Demeure." It is run by two men, one english (Richard) and the other French (Philippe). they have been running it (from about April through November) for more than 20 years. Both speak fluent French and English and are extremely welcoming hosts, as is their golden retriever. they are very helpful with travel plans and destinations in the area. The B & B is quite affordable (I think about 110 euros). Best of all, Richard is a gifted cook and prepares a delicious meal for guests (33 euros) if that is something you want. Which we did. I think 3 nights. On the nights he doesn't cook, there is a pleasanr family restaurant a few hudrend yards away.

Anyway, I think you can tell that La Belle Demeure is our favorite and a place we hope to enjoy again..
