When I went to Chantilly there was no action at the horse areas - I believe there are practice sessions so you may want to time your trip to when they are also offered - makes Chantilly something than just another lovely cheateau!

I don't think ANY of us equate Paris (or New York) with "small town country".
But as someone pointed out, the OP seems to think that the "tourist sights/sites" of Paris are not worthy!! I might point out that they didn't have their beginnings as "tourist sites" but began as historic Paris--AND remain so.
the reason for travel is to see places that are different from what we see here. Vistitors that come to my mid-to-large size city are quite interested, but it ain't NYC,Chicago or DC.
I wonder where the OP is from. He/she is going to have an opportunity to visit Spain--and probably small towns there.
I wonder if he/she realizes that the chateau of Versailles is actually near a smaller town called Versailles.

I don't read that at all into the OP's statement or subsequent statement but a desire to get out of Paris and into if not the real France another France and I applaud him/her for that.

I appreciate all of your suggestions but it seems like many of you have misunderstood my purpose. I am a student and reason why I have limited time in France is because of my budget. I figure since purchasing a plane ticket is one of the most expensive part of any trip, I might as well make use of my time in Europe by visiting France before I head home. I don't get opportunity to travel often, and this will be my last time in a while, hence why I wanted to make the most of my trip. Also, I never meant to imply a dissatisfaction for Paris because it is too "touristy". As mentioned above, I have a limited amount of time and just want to make a day trip to a different place nearby Paris. Reason why I asked for suggestions is not to get away from tourist because I will be one myself, but because many tours I've been looking at are catered to groups or couples.

Also, I asked for unpopular tourist sites suggestions because coming from a big city myself, I know there are many sites worth visiting that aren't as well known. I've never been to Europe and let alone France, it doesn't hurt to learn more so I can better plan my trip and make the best out of it.

If you can squeeze in the Musee Carnavalet, it is a museum dedicated to the history of Paris. Very interesting and free!

You might also consider the basilica of St. Denis, a short metro ride from the center.

Right in the 5th Arr and easy to pop in amid a day of sightseeing on the Left Bank, try St. Etienne du Mont. Very near the Pantheon and Luxembourg gardens. Not far from the Musee du Moyen Age.
