Place to propose

I need suggestions of a very good place to propose to my girlfriend in May next year. Cities we will be visiting:
Madrid, Barcelona, Florence, Pisa, Milan, Venice and London

In Madrid after a night of clubbing and showing off your fancy dance moves finish with hot chocolate and churros at San Gines - http://www.chocolateriasangines.com. The rich chocolate will send her estrogen levels soaring causing her to swoon when you pop the question. The rest is up to you

Barcelona.......In the Placa Espana when the fountains and the music are playing

Venice.......On the Rialto Bridge, or St Marks Sq

London.......On the London Eye, or in the Tower or on Tower Bridge

Pisa......by or on the Leaning Tower

If she "No" at the first attempt, you've got lots of other places to be persistent!

This question is asked occasionally on this board. Search for ideas. Venice is probably the most romantic of the places you will visit. What about a gondola ride - a little corny but certainly romantic.

Not Pisa - I find the place very unromantic.

Venice: by the Ponte Accademia.

Barcelona: if you want a crowd, by the Magic Fountains. If not, Rubicund's idea is good.

As mamcalice notes, this question is occasionally asked on travel forums.

The mistake people make in my opinion is that they think that the PLACE is what makes a proposal romantic. I disagree. It is the MOMENT that makes it romantic.

So someone decides to go on a gondola ride in Venice, pay the gondalier to sing 'Oh solo mio' and propose. They are trying to CREATE the MOMENT.

Now ask yourself this, do you think a moment you have 'created' is as romantic as a spontaneous moment that just happens? When I hear of people proposing on an airplane or in a hot air balloon or any in any other CONTRIVED way, I think 'contrived'. They may be cute, they may make a good YOUtube video but they are still contrived.

So my advice is to propose when the moment feels right and don't worry about contriving anything.

I cannot think of anything worse than forcing a contrived situation, even worse if it was in front a couple of hundred gawping tourists.

Of the cities mentioned, I have visited all and only find Venice romantic. The remaining are just too urban and too big. Find a small cafe in Benice after having an enjoyable day and find the right moment.

If you are planning such a trip you must be convinced already. Why don't you propose now and suggest the trip as a celebration of your proposal. You will certainly enjoy the trip more without the stress of the build-up to the occasion.

If she loves you she will say yes now.

Just up above the fountain on the steps of the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona. Even during the day. Someone will be playing the guitar. Great view of the city. I may try it myself someday, if I can still climb the stairs.

Timing may come into play - do you want to propose at the beginning, middle or end of trip (if a possible no I'd wait till London)

Certainly Venice pops into mind - go off into one of the fairly deserted parts of Venice well away from the Maddening Crowds - perhaps by a canal - some local vino and pop the question - may be the most membrable place of any.

My friend proposed to his wife in the whispering gallery of St Paul's Cathedral in London.

The gallery is part way up the inside of the dome. If you stand on one side and your partner stands on the other, you can whisper a message against the wall and it travels around the dome. Neat!

Nice one Kate, but can others hear the proposal .... as it could get tricky? Can they eavesdrop the answer: I wouldnt want to hear others witness me being told to "Get stuffed".

Question: What atmosphere are you looking for? Do you want crowds or solitude?

For me, in Venice, a nice dinner at the waterfront in the Dorsoduro, then a nighttime stroll with a view of Giudecca. Buy a gelato and ...

For Florence, take the bus to the Piazzale Michelangelo, have a glass of wine, watch the sun set over the bridges of the city and ...
