Pick up rental car at Heathrow

We are staying in London for several days before we go to Heathrow to pick up our rental car. We are driving to Stonehenge after we pick up the car. I have directions to Stonehenge, but how hard is it to drive out of Heathrow? Any suggestions on directions for driving out of Heathrow? Thanks so much.

I think it is very difficult driving out of Heathrow...not so hard out of Gatwick....see if you can find a rental company that will take you away from the terminal to their agency and drive away from there...it's possible your travel agent or AAA travel agency can help you.

Joan,
You can find a map of Heathrow at the website listed below. The rental agency parking lots are in close proximity to the M4 route which will take you towards Stonehenge. Both are on the north side of the airport. Go to the following for graphics:
http://www.baa.co.uk/domino/baa/baan...w+getting+here

Joan-

I would agree that Heathrow is confusing to drive around. We rented a car from Europcar out of Heathrow and got on the M-4 going west. That part was not that bad: the directions on the signs were pretty easy to follow. Also, you are taking the first exit off of the appropriate roundabouts, which reduces the stress level.

But coming back to the Europcar lot at Heathrow, I could see it was not going to be so easy. So I got off the M-4 at the M-25, going south until I hit exit 14 which goes to Terminal 4. I exited toward Terminal 4, went straight through the first roundabout, took the first exit off the second roundabout and followed the perimeter road to the Europcar lot. It may have been more distance, but it was easier to manuever (I would think).

Best of luck and don't worry about having too many British pounds when you hit Heathrow. There are plenty of good places to spend them.

Don't worry! We did the same thing 2 years ago and believe me if I can do it anybody can. Just make sure you can find reverse before leaving the rental lot.

Thank you to everyone. We are taking these postings with us and will follow the directions. I am hoping that there is only one main rental place to pick up the car. If there isn't, I guess I'll have to call and get the correct terminal. Thanks again.

Joan-

When you arrive at Heathrow, you board a bus for your rental car company that takes you out to their lot on the north side of the airport (as Wes said). It shouldn't matter which terminal you arrive at.

In addition, the people at your rental car company should be able to give you good driving directions both to and from the airport. If you are really concerned, I would ask them for the exit to take (first, second, etc.) off the roundabouts.

But you will make it. Everybody gets lost, takes the wrong roundabout exit, etc. But it just adds to the charm of the trip, right?
