I recall during the Secret Itineraries tour at the Palazzo Ducale, as we first entered we could photograph the courtyard. But as we began to climb the golden staircase up to the interior, our guide announced, "Take your photos now, because you are not allowed to take any other photographs of the interior."

Thank you for sharing your comments on the Palazo Ducale and Basilica. Do you know if photos are allowed in the interiors of other museums or palazzos that might be smaller or less well traveled?

Definitely not allowed in the Doges Palace, though it was allowed in the courtyard and the dungeon. Check the museum etc. websites, they usually tell you whether or not photography is permitted inside, if it's all in Italian just google the exact web address and you can select viewing it under google translate.
