phone cards

I have heard it is less expensive to buy a phone card in the UK than in the US for making calls within UK and from UK back to the US. Does anyone know if there is any truth to that? Any recommendations on where to purchase or what kind? Thanks for any insight.

I didn't price one for within the UK, but the card for calls to the US is cheaper in the UK. I was happy with both the price and sound quality with the Pay Peanuts card.

They are available at most magazine/tobacco stands.

Have a great trip!

We just spent 3 months in the UK and phone cards are the way to go. Purchase them from the post office or W. H. Smith stores in 5 pound increments.

Be sure to phone from private phones if possible. Phoning from public pay phones adds a 17 pence per minute charge. A 10 pound card using a private line gives you 180 minutes to the USA. The same card using pay phones gives you around 40 minutes.

Cheers,

I made 6 or 7 calls to the US. My total time was well over an hour. All of the calls were from pay phones and there was still time on the £5 card when I returned.

Same goes for continental Europe when it comes to phone cards. Just buy them there at newsstands and tobacco stands to make local and transatlantic calls. Definitely cheaper than using any calling card from the USA.
Another thing I like about them: Your name is not tied to this card so no surprise fees can be added to your home phone accounts.
