If you are lucky enough to have a Voicestream Tri-Band mobile phone it will work in the UK. Voicestream uses the same phone technology, GSM, that Europe uses. The catch though is that in Europe their phones are at 900 MHz or 1800 MHz and the US is at 1900 MHz. Normal GSM phones in the US only operate at 1900 MHz which is why you need a Tri-Band which operates at all three. This is normally a Motorola P7089 or P280. In the future Cingular and AT&T mobile will also be using GSM. There are also smaller operators in the US that use GSM.

Rates vary from $0.18 to $0.40 for local calls to $0.48 to $1.38 for calls to the US.

Another benefit is that you will receive calls at your regular number.

Actually, it is probably cheaper to buy a SMS card from one of the UK mobile providers say Virgin. You switch the SMS cards, and voila you have a British mobile phone and number. Cost for the SMS card is £10 which includes £5 worth of calls.

Incidentally, in the UK you do not pay to receive calls on your mobile.
