Yess:
You can use a credit card (VISA, MC or AMEX) in all public phones in Switzerland and most in France. Alternatively, you might want to order an AT & T or Global One (or similar) card which list 800 numbers for each country and bill to your account. All these worked fine for me.

Enjoy your trip

Phil

Paige is correct. You must buy a card for each country. The big advantage with buying a card in Europe is that all incoming calls to your cell phone are free, unlike the U.S. There are dozens of places in major cities in Europe selling phone cards. If you do frequent trips to Europe, the best thing to do is buy a phone (that works in the states as well in Europe)and then buy the phone card in Europe.
PS- When you buy a phone card in Europe, you are assigned a telehone number. The prices for the card are reasonable.

Why not rent a cellphone before you leave? Have your relatives and friends call you instead. Incoming phone calls are free in Europe. In the US call 1-888-ringtime or ringtime.com for more info.
I rented a phone for Ireland this past summer and it was easy for me to have people call me. Have a good time.
