Phone Call

As I will be traveling in France, Italy
and Switzerland in November I was wondering
if it is possible to buy a phone card in
Paris that can be used in each country
or do I need to buy local cards in each
country

(assuming you are American) I purchased an AT & T phone card before leaving for Paris in August. I was able to phone home every night with no problems. There is an 800 access number from each country that is listed on the cards package.

You can rent a tri-band phone before you leave for Europe, that works in the USA and all over Europe. Phone is fed-ex'd to you before you leave and you fed-ex it back upon your return. Good rates call 732-617-2100 for more info.

Yess:
You can use a credit card (VISA, MC or AMEX) in all public phones in Switzerland and most in France. Alternatively, you might want to order an AT & T or Global One (or similar) card which list 800 numbers for each country and bill to your account. All these worked fine for me.

Enjoy your trip

Phil

You'll need to buy local phone cards in each country. As far as I know there's not one that will work everywhere.

Jim Sep 20th, 2000 05:42 AM

Paige is correct. You must buy a card for each country. The big advantage with buying a card in Europe is that all incoming calls to your cell phone are free, unlike the U.S. There are dozens of places in major cities in Europe selling phone cards. If you do frequent trips to Europe, the best thing to do is buy a phone (that works in the states as well in Europe)and then buy the phone card in Europe.
PS- When you buy a phone card in Europe, you are assigned a telehone number. The prices for the card are reasonable.

I was talking about the kind of phone card you buy at Tabacco stores or wherever, that you use in pay phones that only take cards. You know, the phones with a slot for a card instead of coins. Yess, what were you talking about?

Paige Sep 20th, 2000 06:14 AM

Make that tobacco stores.

Why not rent a cellphone before you leave? Have your relatives and friends call you instead. Incoming phone calls are free in Europe. In the US call 1-888-ringtime or ringtime.com for more info.
I rented a phone for Ireland this past summer and it was easy for me to have people call me. Have a good time.
