Hi everyone! I'm going to be spending 3 days in Southern Tuscany, in a tiny town called Celle Sul Rigo (friends own a place there). I'm planning the following day trips:

Day 1: Siena/ San Gimignano

Day 2: Orvieto

Day 3: ???

Perugia and Montepulciano are contenders for day 3 (one, not both). Any thoughts? Any other ideas? I should mention that my boyfriend and I are not art people - we're more into architecture and history.

THANK YOU!

Day tripping from somewhere remote won't be so easy. Have you looked at driving times on mappy.com or viamichelin.com? If it's Tuscany you want to experience (Perugia and Orvieto aren't in Tuscany), you might want to drive to San Quirico, on to Pienza, then Montepulciano before returning to Celle Sul Rigo. What is the rest of your itinerary? If you are coming from Rome, you might want to stop at Orvieto on your way instead of daytripping.

Not looking at a map, or calculating driving time, I would pick Perugia all over Montepulciano. You can't imagine how gorgeous is the National Gallery of Umbria, in Perugia.

In all cases, plan for afternoon closings and check schedules.

If you're not into art and maybe not interested in the National Gallery of Umbria, I would suggest Montepulciano or even Montalcino as a spot for your visit. Both are much smaller, extremely easy to get into or out of, compared to Perugia, and the views over the countryside are breathtaking.
A little south of Montalcino don't miss the Abbey Sant'Antimo. Great place in the middle of the countryside, wonderful for photos, and the monks do Gregorian chanting.
