Hi Allan,
Perth is a lovely town with lots and lots of shops and the townspeople are very friendly. One day would give you plenty of time to walk around and do some shopping, and have a meal. We have been there several times and eaten in a few restaurants and several pubs and have always enjoyed the food. Enjoy!

One day is enough to see Perth and Scone Palace. Although Perth is a pleasant town, and easily walkable, it's not very large. Also, while there's a lot of history associated with Perth, very little of it is of the "visible" kind - no castles, cathedrals, medieval walls, etc.

Unless there is a specific reason you want to stay in Perth, I wouldn't stay ANY days there. It is a very nice town -- but for the first time visitor to the area the only real place of interest is Scone Palace. I would stay somewhere within driving distance to be able to visit Scone, but somewhere with something more to offer.

Some suggestions: Crieff, Dunkeld, Cupar, Dundee or even St Andrews.

As a native born Perth person, Janis, I want you to know I resemble that remark!!

It really depends what you want to do. It's been quite well summed up by others. Pleasant, in one word, but won't set the heather on fire.

I can do in depth recommendations for things to do in the town and vicinity if you would like

Will you be relying on public transport? If so, I've found Perth to be a very convenient base for day trips -- easy access to places like Stonehaven or Kingussie if the weather's nice and you're up for being outdoors or to Edinburgh, Glasgow, or Aberdeen if the weather's bad and you'd rather do museums and shopping.

To Sheila: No offense intended. In fact I have stayed in Perth and Bridge of Earn a couple of times - BUT be honest, If you only had 9 days in Scotland would you spend one in Perth?? I think not ;-) It is a lovely city but not for someone trying to see "the Lowlands" in 9 days.

And for KT - Using Perth as a base to tour via public transit - sure, BUT allan indicated he is trying to decide between 1 and 2 days there. Not time to go to Stonehaven, Aberdeen or anywhere else if the point was to see Perth.

Again - nothing against Perth - as Sheila put it so well -- It is pleasant but won't set the heather on fire. If I am limited to 9 days, I want that heather flaming.

No - not QUITE that old. Now, Bridge of Earn isn't exactly a scenic paradise. Actually I rented a lovely cottage (Coach house really) about 4 or 5 miles south of Br of Earn. I used it as base to tour around Stirling to the Spittal of Glenshee.

Normally I stay in the Trossachs when I am in central Scotland but this one time I couldn't pass up such a posh cottage for a real bargain.
