Peninsula Trip
Just returned from a 21 day trip to Spain, Portugal & Morocco. We did 4 days on our own in front of a Globus escorted tour & 3 days afterwards.. Nice trip. We did Cordoba & a Madrid bull fight on the front end & Barcelona on the back end. No problem getting around.
We felt very safe, no pick pocket issues - but this was not our first rodeo, so we were aware of our surroundings. It was interesting that we had two security types with our tour in Morocco, furnished by the government per our guide. Lots of young men just sitting around looking at us during the day, but they were well behaved.......if not to us, then to the security types with us.
I do think the tapas issues are over blown.Seems to us that they were little pieces of bread with mystery meat, but to each his own. Speaking of food, we were very pleased with our meals.
The highlight for me was Cordoba, where we hired a guide recommended by Rick Steves to guide us. A hundred euros well spent.
The bull fight was on our bucket list, but once was enough.
You can easily see how the social safety net required by the EU is hurting both Spain & Portugal, but that is a conversation for a political site, not here.
All in all, a good trip. Glad we took it & we look forward to our next trip in 2020.

This is a gross over simplification of tapas. They vary substantially from the omnipresent tortilla española and other traditional dishes like shrimp in garlic sauce and patatas bravas to new variations like we had just two weeks ago partridge pate and tomatoes stopped with pesto mix. I am not sure where you went and what you ordered, but there is a whole world out there of which you are unfamiliar.
