parking in Italy

If our hotels in Rome and Florence do not have parking where can we park our rental car?

In Rome, I parked twice at the curbside in front of the hotel. They gave me a parking permit so that I wouldn't get a ticket (resident parking only zone). In Florence, also twice, I had my hotel call a nearby garage to pick my car up. Two guys showed up on a scooter and one of them drove the car away. At pickup the same process. I never got to know where my car was garaged. Kind of expensive ... Lit 29,000/night once and Lit 35,000 the 2nd time.

Twice in Italy we got our car back from the hotel "valet" damaged. In Florence the valet disappeared for a while & returned with his part of the tag filled with a handwritten note in italian stating that the car already had side damage before it was parked. As we got into our car, two older American couples found their car returned damaged as well.
Another time the hotel in Modena simply said that the valet service was not associated with the hotel therefore they were not responsible for any damage(though we paid for the parking service on our hotel bill). The obligatory rental insurance covered all damages, but we were concerned about driving with a crushed rearlight.
On a more positive note, we didn't have any problem with valets in other hotels in Italy.

We parked in a locked garage below the Borghese Park/Gallery. I think the price was about $15. per 24 hour day. No problems.

Hi there! In Florence we parked our car in the train station all weekend (4 days) It was quite expensive, so I would try for a hotel with a garage.
