Ah Coco cheeerrrie!

THE STADE DE FRANCE
Just north of Montmartre, in the gritty suburb of Saint Denis, sits one of the most novel marvels of contemporary architect in the Paris region, and indeed in all of Europe in the opinion of many architecture wags - The Stade of France.
Of interest to football and sports fans of course, but appealing to anyone who enjoys cool avant-garde space-age architecture, the national stadium of France is a visual feast inside and out.
Sports fans especially will want to take the Heart of the Stadium tour, featuring exhibits documenting the stade's greatest sporting moments as well as its construction.
Eurostar and TGV-Nord rail travelers roll right by the stadium when leaving Paris to London or Lille/Brussels.
(RER B train to a stop right by the stadium)

PARIS' 1ST MUSEUM DEVOTED ENTIRELY TO ARCHITECTURE OPENS

The new Cite de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine opens this month in the Palais du Chaillot, opposite the Eiffel Tower.

A section of it, The Galerie Moderne et Contemporaine wholly dwells on architecture of the 19th-, 20th- and 21st-centuries.

gomiki & ekhu - it's appreciated you take time to say that. merci! I share your exhilaration with all things Parisian!

TWO LESSER KNOWN BUT FINE MUSEUMS
When talking about the La Nuit des Musees on May 20, the idea behind that was to highlight some museums in the immediate vicinity of Paris that are very special but often overlooked, such as:

MUSEE NATIONAL DE LA RENAISSANCE
in a dreamy chateau in north suburban town of Ecouen - this museum is actually quite popular for its superlative collection of Renaissance art and life.
www.musee-renaissance.fr

MUSEE D'ARCHEOLOGIE NATIONALE
in the Chateau of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, in this leafy western and beautiful suburban town featuring the sprawling Saint Germain forest - the museum is known especially for its Gallo-Roman collections.

The castle reeks of history - Mary Queen of Scots lived here from age 6 until she was married off ten years later to the French Dauphin, future Francois II. James II lived here after being deposed from the English throne until he died here. He's buried in the church near the castle. Plus a litany of other French and English royals lived or stayed here at various time.
A classic royal garden and park adjoins the castle - making a very pleasant place quickly reached by RER train from Paris.

MUSEE NATIONAL DE LA CERAMIQUE IN SEVRES

is a third museum the La Nuit des Musees seeks to highlight. Not only does this historic old ceramic factory complex on the western edge of Paris, on the Seine, adjoining the Parc Saint Cloud, have a sterling collection of the famous brilliantly multi-hued Sevres porcelain collection, the French counterfoil to Prussia's Meissen, English Wedgwood, Dutch Delftware, etc.

The museum, extant here since 1824, showcases not only Sevres china but the other famous ones as well.

The old factory outback still cranks out Sevres stuff and at times there are demonstrations you can watch.

A fine complement to the museum is the sprawling Parc de St Cloud that surrounds the museum to the north and, on a hill, to the west. Climb the hill for a spectacular view of all of Paris laid out below like some huge model.

www.musee-ceramique-sevres.fr

(Metro: Ligne 9 end of line: Pont de Sevres station; then cross Seine; a novel route is to take the tram T-2 to the Musee de Sevres stop right out in front of the museum - the tram takes a neat route from Issy (RER C) to La Defense (RER A) - yielding some nice views over Paris in the vicinity of the Belvedere tram halt - the tram is over the course of a former rail line that operated the same route - a train famous for having a third-rail a la London - now replaced by modern trams.)

A bit about a day trip to St Cloud i wrote in 2003:
Palenque's Off-Beat Paris: St. Cloud
Date: 11/06/2003
Day-tripping to St. Cloud and its immense park.
St. Cloud is an upscale suburb of Paris, perched on a hill on its west side offering sweeping vistas over all of Paris. Though the small tony town has little of exceptional interest, the St. Cloud Park provides one of the finest views over Paris, spread out below like a relief map.
The park itself, which once surrounded a sumptuous now vanished chateau, also has several monumental fountains and is a vast oasis of greenery. But its best feature is its stupendous view over Paris. Bring a picnic! If you walk down thru the park down to the Seine, you'll exit right by the Sevres National Ceramic Museum and its acclaimed repository of Sevres ceramics.
The Sevres factory is still working and on many days you can see the ceramic being made.
Day-trip Practicalities: Train from Gare St. Lazare to St. Cloud, walk to nearby park and walk through park to Sevres, hopping the Tram T-2 from there that goes along the Seine, either upstream to Defense or downstream where, when the tram ends, you can transfer to the RER/metro system.

Merci Margaret!

THE MARCHE ALIGRE - Though listed in the above as one of Paris' four major flea markets, this market has much more than fleas for sale...it is also a colorful animated old-world food market strung out along a whole block.

I visited the market in February... there are booksellers and the usual eclectic flea market offerings as well as lots of veggies - i bought 3 avocados for 1 euro - big plump ones!

The market is near the Bastille, a lively area of small shops, etc.

PUT A LITTLE ROMANCE INTO YOUR PARIS SOJOURN AT THE:

MUSEE DE LA VIE ROMANTIQUE!

One of Paris' lesser known but unique and romantic museums is the Musee de la Vie Romantique (The Museum of Romantic Life), which is devoted to "romantic" artists such as the likes of Chopin, Berlioz and George Sand.

MUSEE DES ANNEES 30

For another lesser known but capitivating museum head west to the suburb of Boulogne-Billancourt for this museum devoted to the art of the 1930s, a k a broadly as Art Moderne.

30s art has been called a stylistic bridge between Art Deco and Modernism art and this suburb just 15 minutes from central Paris also has a host of fine examples of 1930s architecture, including foremost the edifice housing the museum.
