Paris - Which restaurant for my birthday?
Hi,
I'm heading to Paris to celebrate my birthday in mid-May! I want to do something special (even though I'm going solo).
After reading a few recent trip reports, I've come up with these 3 possibilities. This will be a Friday lunch or dinner.
*Le Florimond
*La Taverna Restaurant
*Le Grand Colbert
I've never been to any of the above, but each one sounded good. I don't consider myself a "foodie" so my goal is not to have the "stand up on the table and sing" moment after the meal.
My criteria: good food (yes, it's very subjective), nothing loaded with a lot of cream sauce (I can handle a bit of cream sauce, just not overflowing amounts), variety of choices, etc. I know it'll probably be hard to recommend based on my very vague and general criteria. But, here's hoping.
Thanks!

We dine out at restaurants about 30 times per year in France - usually at mid-range/upper-mid restaurants. Le Grand Colbert is the worst restaurant we've ever dined at. There we four of us - we all agreed it was very poor food. The decor was not as elegent as I expected either.

I do like fish, beef, chicken, and vegetables. I typically order some form of chicken or fish. Gourmet - not necessarily the "it" for me. Simple cuisine? Sure.
The budget? Since this is my birthday meal, I'm going to splurge. I would say somewhere between 30 to 35 euros?? That isn't to say that I can't find a great meal for less. I'm all for that happening as well. I don't drink so a glass of wine or other such beverages will not need to be factored into the budget.
Again, I'm not a foodie so this is a bit new to me.
Thanks.

That's a really strange trio - how'd you come up with that?
I love the Florimond. I "discovered it" the day it opened and have been a fan ever since. You could have a lovely meal there for your budget without wine. The lagoustine raviolis and his grandmother's recipe for stuffed cabbage are divine. It's a very small restaurant - maybe 12 tables, if that - so consider that. But it's very "intime" and they will treat you like a special guest.

Agree with StCirq. I would choose Le Florimond for its good food and more importantly, as you are solo, I think you would feel more comfortable in their intimate atmosphere.
The service is perfect and you will be treated as a guest in their home. Any of the larger restaurants may leave you feeling lost.

TravelRibbon - If you want a really nice typical French meal in an oldtime Bistro with a lovely zinc bar and glorius old interior, then look no further than Le Bistrot du Peintre.
Situated at 116 Avenue Ledru Rollin, 11th arr. Tel; 01 47 00 34 39 for reservations for dinner.
The price is in your range and described as " Very good food, like mom's if mom were a very good French cook"!
Metro; Ledru Rollin

TR - We'll be in Paris mid-May as well, a few days before my birthday. I love traveling around my special day. A few years ago we spent one of my birthday's in Florence. Memorable. Have an awesome time! And, happy birthday to you!

We enjoyed dinner on our 15th anniversary at Florimond last autumn. It was a wonderful evening. The staff are so charming and helpful, and the food was delicious (one of us had the stuffed cabbage StCirq has praised; she's right!).
Have a happy birthday -- you've chosen well.
