Most attractions that most tourists want to see are a good bit south of the Montmarte area. However, the metro in Paris is one of the best in the world, and you can get to wherever you want pretty quickly. If you prefer Montmarte for some reason, stay there and catch the metro; but if you want to be within reasonable walking distance, try the first through seventh arrondissements (districts). There are lots of hotels in those districts that have been recommended on this web site already.

I walk a lot, so to me that's walking distance to everything. It's not the most lively neighborhood, but it's not dull either.

First time in Paris? Go for a hotel in the 5eme, 6eme, or 7eme arrondissement. They are near the tourist attractions, lots of street life, cafes, restaurants, shops.

I stayed at a great hotel in the 5th arrondissement called La Minerve. It was affordable, comfortable and in a great location...very close to Notre Dame.
Have a wonderful trip!
We always stay on the Left Bank right off of the Boulevard St Germain.Everything is there or close by.Everywhere else is easy to get to by metro or bus.

I like to walk a lot but I wouldn't consider border of 9/18th arr. to be walking distance to most tourist sites. I wouldn't walk it. Bottom of the 9th, maybe (near Opera Garnier). It's probably about 1-1/2 miles to the Seine from where you mention. If you want to stay there, I agree, just take the metro. I do most of the time anyway as I don't stay near the Seine, either.

Left Bank Rules ! Look in the 5th, 6th or 7th arrondissements.
