For MX: I am afraid there is not a lot of old London town left. The great fire did for most of it, though we do have some treasures, whether the well-known Westminster Hall and Tower of London or the less-visited St Bartholomew the Great or DSouthwark Cathedral.

Something along the lines you seek is at http://www.indiana.edu/~victoria/haineswalks.html, notes on walks I like.

Welcome to London

Ben Haines
Mr. Haines,

Thank you for a lovely report on your brief trip. As with most of the others who responded, I do not think you were wrong in pointing out the lack of pleasantries from the girl. I always say "Please" and "Thank you" in such situations, but sometimes forget (until someone else in my traveling party reminds me) to also include "Good morning" and such in my greetings - so I would not have minded if someone reminded me of something like that.

Might I ask why you chose to take the ferry from Dover to Calais and then board the Eurostar rather than take the Eurostar the entire trip? Was it more economical to do so or just more enjoyable? When we lived in Germany for a few years during high school, we always took the ferry or the Hovercraft. My fiance and I will be going to London and Paris for our anniversary and I had considered taking the ferry just so he could have that experience.

Since I have read this before and always enjoy Mr Haines and his advice as well as reports such as this, I just want to add one small thing to this thread.
We should all count ourselves very lucky if we live long enough for some rude person to call us " a fossilized git"..although it would perhaps be more pleasant to just reach that stage without the rude prat bringing it to our attention!

I chose the ferry rather than Eurostar in order to pay half the Eurostar fare, and in order not to be tied to a given return date. On train boat train you can travel any time within two months. The when I reached Calais Ville station (I found that I could travel the French section by first class Eurostar for a trifling supplement. I also like the experience of real abroad that the Port of Calais gives you, and of history that I take from sight of the White Cliffs.

Ben Haines

Mr Haines. Thanks for the great link to your London Walks. I am so ignorant of London that I wasn't even thinking about something even older than London as we read about it today. Thanks for the other suggestions
Mike
