Where would you choose as a half way stop when driving from Paris to St Remy de Provence?

So many choices but we usually stayed in Avallon or in Villeneuve-sur-Yonne at Leslie Caron's Hotel.

I wouldn't drive, but if I did I'd stop in Lyon.

I don't have a choice but to drive because I cannot re-route my flight out of France from Paris to Nice or somewhere in the south.

It'll be a 6-hour drive all up but it'll be broken up with an overnight stop, so ok in that regard.

I am also thinking so where near Valence, perhaps staying overnight at Hotel Pic?

Have you considered the TGV from Paris to Avignon to pick up your rental car and the same for returning for your flight out of Paris?

We flew into Paris and took the TGV down and back to Avignon. It's a much nicer way to travel IMO. It's only 2 hours and 40 minutes approx without any stops along the way.

We paid 38 Euros for two total in second class down and 88 Euros for two total in first class to come back. You could barely buy the gas down and back for that considering it is almost 1.50 Euro a liter.

Something to consider if there are only two of you.

There are some trains leaving from CDG airport and going directly to Avignon. So you wouldn't have to go into Paris. If your schedule -- allowing for flight delays -- fits with one of these.

Also, easyjet has some cheap flights from Charles de Gaulle to Nice, one in the morning, one in the evening. If the timing works out, that's another option.

Will you be arriving in Paris after an overnight flight? Then picking up a rental car and driving? Not a good idea, what with jet lag and lack of sleep.

You might even get soem "Prems" bargains...got from CDG, if you can..enjoy........

May I ask why you don't recommend driving? On our next trip to France, we will be driving from Paris to St Remy de Provence also. Thanks, just want to have as much information as possible,we are in the planning stage.

Because it's a boring, nerve-jarring 6-hour drive on the autoroute, and I can get there in under 3 hours on the TGV without any stress.

We've alternated taking the TGV with driving from Paris to Nice and like both options. Driving has the advantage of letting you stop where you want to sightsee or have a meal; the train is, of course, quicker.

If you decide to drive, a good place to spend the night would be somewhere in lower Burgundy. We (and others here) like the Château d'Igé, which is not far off the autoroute but is still in peaceful surrondings.

I meant to add that my well travelled friend just loves Pic.

I think it depends on what kind of trip you want from Paris. If you are in a hurry and plan to get on auto routes to get there as fast as possible..I would catch the TGV at CDG. If you want a sight seeing trip of getting off auto routes and stopping here and there, you can make a great trip out of it. It will eat up your trip time.

You are the only one who can decide what it is you are looking for in your trip..

I can't do the TGV option given we are travelling with a young child and therefore too much luggage, train travel is just not an option for us.

I have driven that route once and didn't really mind it. We stopped at Auxerre last time. Just looking for a fresh place to stop.

Further down Burgundy is a good suggestion, will look into it. Thanks for all the feedback to date.
