Mimar brings up an interesting point. While the IDP is not at all necessary in France, Italy (as well as Austria) does require it for some strange reason.
The official French rules claim that it is necessary for non EU drivers, but it isn't true -- it is just to avoid claims of discrimination from the countries with 'strange' alphabets (like Russia, the Middle East, China...).

Don't you have car insurance on your credit card(s?). If not, buy the Amex $25-per trip all-inclusive insurance.
