Paris to Normandy--best way to get there?

What is the best/quickest way to get to Normandy area beaches and what are the best things to do while there?

Best depends on how many of you, how much time you have, how you like to travel:

You can take a train to Bayeux, then pick up a tour (Normandy Tours is right across the street from the station, I've used it and recommend it) or a car.

You can drive from Paris to Normandy; you then have a lot of freedom to visit the beaches, museums, and surrounding countryside.

You can take an organized tour with Cityrama or ParisVision directly from Paris.

You'll want to visit the D-Day beaches and the cemeteries; you'll want to visit the landing museum at Arromanches
http://www.normandy1944.com/
In Bayeux, you'll want to see the tapestry. You'll want to eat the local cuisine and drink calvados (or maybe not). See the biggest moo-cows in existence (okay, an exaggeration, but they are humdingers). Bring an empty film canister and scoop up a little of sand from Omaha Beach.

If you are traveling solo, recommend the train, then you can see something besides the road. It is about 2-1/4 hr from Gare St Lazare to Caen, another 15 min to Bayeux. Add the Peace Memorial in Caen to Elvira's list. Definitely try the calvados, dining in Normandy is not complete without it. And all those cows make some of the world's best cheeses.

Calvados is a brandy distilled from apples. Normandy is famous for its apple production. Do not get the impression that it tastes like apple juice with alcohol. Think of Cognac being made out of grape mash to give you an idea. People from Normandy take their Calvados very seriously.
Also, they produce many types of cider. You can have all sweetnes levels and with or without alcohol. We really enjoyed sampling both when we were there.

Next time you dine out, order a calvados as a digestif but be forewarned a less expensive brand ca taste like fire water.
