paris to Bayeux -day trip?

hi everyone,

still planning here. i am going to be in paris in october for 7 days. i have been twice before and have seen most of the paris sites, so this trip i want to take a day or two and make some day trips outside of paris.

i have already decided to go to chartres and i am trying to decide on the second one.

i really want to see the tapestry in bayeux but am not sure how to go about arranging the least expensive transportation. sncf said i can travel from st. lazare station to bayeux for about 398 francs roundtrip. is there a less expensive rail pass or special that i am not seeing.

also in bayeux, what would you recommend that i try to see in a 6 or 7 hour time period besides the tapestry. any city tours that anyone can recommend and thru what company?

thanks
sandyc

We drove to Bayeux from Paris, spending several nighs at Honfleur and Mont St. Michel in the in-between, so it 's not a fair comparison. Maybe someone who has done it as a day trip can comment. Bayeux has a lovely town center and I am sure you would have enough to do, but it seems like a bit of a push in terms of distance. At what time does the train leave St. Lazare?

I took a day tour to Normandy from Paris in November. booked it through a travel company in NY, French Accents, that found a small, guided tour.

I would highly recommend that while in Bayeux that you visit the D-Day meseum in Caen. (It's probably about a half hour away.) It has a much broader focus than just the D-Day battle.

If you are an American, you also might want to visit the American Cemetary and Pont D'Hoc.

A French railpass is $180 for 3 days travel; no savings there. If you're under 25 or over 60, you can get discounted fares on the SNCF; otherwise, the fare is around 370+ff. Across from the train station at Bayeux you can pick up Normandy Tours for a tour of the D-Day beaches. M. Bacon would probably work a tour around including the tapestries, or you could arrange with him to be picked up after your tapestry viewing for a trip to the D-Day beaches.

This won't be a cheap trip no matter how you cut it. The D-Day beaches are about 15km from Bayeux; you could rent a bicycle and visit that way.
